Thanks! We will be diving with Beyond Diving (a Canadian ex-pat) and it looks like we will try to afford the Royal (it looks spectacular).

I stayed at the Royal last November and it was spectacular. Fortunately it was not on my dime as my company elected to have a sales conference there.

My wife and I stayed at the Catalonia Yucatan in Puerto Aventuras a couple of years ago and loved the place. It's not real big and does have a sister hotel next door that allows restaurant shares. Got a deal that included air fare for about $800 each. We like being able to walk to the village and enjoy the restaurants and shops. We dove with an operation in the village, very professional, small boats, very experienced and laid back divers. The diving is a bit different than Cozumel so don't expect the same kind of reefs. Of course the cenotes on the Mayan Riviera are stunning. I dove with Aquanauts and found them to be a solid dive operation. We also did a tour to one of the ocean parks and it was well worth the day trip. One advantage to Puerto Aventuras, it's a bit of a gated community and taxis, vans, buses all go through a security gate, so it gives you a bit more of a secure feeling. Although I have never had a problem in Mexico in 40 years of travelling Baja and the Mainland. We did miss staying in PDC because of the Starbucks.... ;>)

Just got back from the Royal last week. It was excellent as usual, send me an e-mail if you need details. Dove with Abyss again and had another great experience (will be posting review later). 12 years now going to Playa 2X or 3X a year.

Gran Porto is great hotel if you are bringing the kids along, right across the street from the Royal.

We stayed at the Wyndham Maya, and we really had no major complaints. The grounds are lovely and the beach is very nice. The food in the general cafeteria was bland and completely uninspiring, but they have two restaurants on the property where you have to make reservations to eat, and we didn't try either one. Internet access is problematic -- they have an "internet cafe" and you pay by the 15 minute increment, and the keyboards are Spanish. But it was very inexpensive, and the room was spacious and clean, and the staff were very nice.

We stayed at the Royal last November and it was great you won't be disapointed.
