Maybe Reckdiver is willing to help fund AED purchases for all the boats he dives off of. Many good points have been made here, the takeaway is an AED is not a cure all and the likelyhood of the need may not meet the cost.

Dave,

Pat yourself on the back as I have taken your excellent advice (even though it was years prior to your lending). I do fund all the expenses for safety equipment on every boat I dive. As a matter of fact, I fund all the expenses; fuel, insurance, maintenance etc.

For me, it is a reasonable price to pay. In fact for me, it is a great value. I don't have to worry being lost by the op and have to contact them by vhf to give my location. I don't have to worry that the Capt. was on a bender till 5 am in morning or sign that silly release absolving the op even if they are negligent. I don't even have to worry that the boat lacks proper safety equipment. I even get to decide what safety equipment I may stow aboard; required or not. I always carry my own personal fire extinguishers and PFDs.

When boarding, I never have to worry about looking at the other passengers and thinking to myself, "Oh god, these folks are a bunch of every-other-year divers, Mike Nelson wannabe's, law enforcement pseudo "tec" divers or my personal favorites; the ones that immediately tell the Captain how to run the boat.

Best of all, the boat I dive on is always willing to accommodate my schedule... every time.

Great post.
