I have been debating all day to post or not, so please be gentle.
I am in the middle of my PADI open water class, so all of this is advice for the future. I am fortunate that I have the opportunity to travel a bit both for fun as well as for work. My DH does not dive, nor do I always travel with a "buddy". This leads to my question:
Everyone has to go thought dives 1-10 dives to get to 1,000. I live 2 hours away from any dive site in the Northeast, so although I will be diving and getting experience at home somewhat, most of my diving unfortunately/fortunately will be while I am traveling. As every place I visit will be a new site, how does one find a reputable dive outfit and DM, and know whether they have your best interest at heart, and a DM that you can hire to guide the dive and act as a buddy (since I will almost never have my own). I know that at some point I will feel comfortable enough to buddy with another single on the trip, but until I have more skills, I don't feel that it would be fair to them just yet. After reading a lot of threads on this board, I don't know who to trust anymore. Online reviews aren't always helpful either.
How did you start away from home, and what if any suggestions are there? Thanks for the help.
