Gentle Readers,

I just picked up some junk from Craig's list and with it 1 al 80, 1 al 6 cu pony. Both with original manufacture dates past the dreaded "bad alloy" birthdays-but out of hydro. I don't normally buy tanks and "flip" them, but I don't have any need for either of these. So the question is, would having them hydro tested increase the sale value enough to warrant doing so, or is would that be a waste of money?

Thank you,

Couv

Hi Couv, if the AL80 is a catalina, please send me a PM; I'd like to buy it as I'm putting together a set of AL80 doubles. In general I think it's going to be easier to sell it with a current hydro. I'm sure you can bring it to a testing facility yourself instead of paying through the nose at a dive shop. A $20 hydro for sure you'd get back in sale price, a $45 hydro/vis at a dive shop maybe not.

For local sales, I think I would simply offer a full refund if the tank failed hydro. BTW, I'm paying $15 for Al80 hydro.

I would get them hydro'd and tack on a bit more for the trouble so to give yourself better chance of sale and negotiating room. BTW there are a couple of WTB for folks looking for 6cuft cylinders for dry suit inflator. MIght contact them directly and see if they want them as is.

I agree with this considering the time of year. Couv, I don't know how things are in your area, but here it seems local sales of dive stuff will be slow for another couple months. The vis might not be nice and fresh by the time an interested buyer comes around. A few months out of a 5 year hydro is nothing. Also, consider the first thing any potential buyer will do with the tank is get a fill, so if it just has the hydro their cost for a vis and fill usually won't be a ton more than just a fill.

If I were in your shoes my deciding factor would be how much of a PITA is would be to do the hydro. If the hydro place is a short drive, they charge a reasonable amount, or you have a few tanks that can be done at the same time, it would definitely help push me into doing the hydro. I probably would not do a 1hr round trip (twice) for a $30 or more hydro on only one tank.

If you want to flip them I might be interested in the 6 cu ft pony.

Thanks all for the great advice. As luck would have it, the pony is a Cat but the 80 is a Lux so sorry Halo. SS, I'll send a PM to you shortly, but I don't think your newborn should be diving yet, so promise me you won't..... :)

That's pretty funny, a baby 6cft tank. Mouthpiece could be a modified pacifier, neoprene diaper, what would you do for fins...

SS.....I have a 13 cu ft (not for sale) for the 7 year old, but I thought you had a new born in need of the pony.

@ Halo. Fins? Babies are supposed to ride side car on Dad's harness, you know-sort of like a sidemount. Jezzz, you have to explain everything to these damn bachelors. (lucky s.o.b.)
