Notice the word rinse, not soak. Soaking loosens up the salt. And puts it in suspension in the water. So the longer you soak it without changing the water and rinsing it, the longer you give that salt to work into tiny places.
I think you are splitting hairs Jim. Most people do rinse their gear first to get off the bulk of the salt water and then give it a soak and another rinse before hanging it up to dry. I don't think anyone exclusively rinses or soaks but performs a combination of the two.
I am not sure if the op's problem is due to poor rinsing. I picked up a G200B with a MK10 that looked like it was never used. For no good reason it was damn near impossible to remove the hose from the first stage.
