Who told you that? I don't know where the PDC airport is, but it's not at the ferry dock.

If I were just going to Tulum, I'd take the bus - which is 2 or 3 blocks from the ferry. I'm renting to go to Coba tho.

When we drove from Playa Del Carmen to Tulum and Coba last year, I believe we did pass an air strip just to the south.

I don't even remember the name of the rental agency we used, but it was just a couple blocks west of the pier in Playa. We paid about $50 for a newer small 4 door with a/c. There were no suprise charges on my card either.
