I see a very positive message in this story that has been overshadowed by the death: a student who had the confidence in his own judgment to turn a dive and leave his instructor when he felt unsafe. Far too many divers would have continued on based on faith in their guide/instructor/mentor/whatever. Trusting his gut likely saved that student's life that day.

That is an excellent point. We hear a lot about "near misses" where an inexperienced diver feels that they have to follow the leader no matter what. Good on the student for knowing when to thumb the dive.
