"Only a card-carrying stroke would do something like this, and showing up with 80/20 is no different than wearing a sign on your back saying 'I am a stroke, and have the papers to prove it'. It announces to all the world that you have no clue, kind of like wearing clip-on suspenders or having dog dirt on your shoes."

I think it is quotes like this and so many others that GI3 has made in the past that go a long way to explaining why DIR is viewed so negatively by so many. GUE has tried to distance itself from this type of stuff but they still have a long way to go.

your the LAST person to be giving advice sir !

I always loved that quote.....If we can't have fun with something as obviously wrong as 80/20, then what can we have fun with :-)

But seriously, this was over a decade ago...it was a different time, when things like that could happen. None of us would ever say something like that today...but we can sure as hell be amused by it...even those that use 80/20 because that is the only fill they can get :-)

Given some of the things I've seen within GUE these days, lets just say that I'm missing George... He had a way of flushing all the crap out of the system...

Too much pissing into the wind, though, for me, I'm just planning on taking some nice wreck vid tomorrow...

Perhaps that's true in the Netherlands ... I hear some of the DIR folks over there take themselves pretty seriously ... but around my area it certainly isn't.

I meant that as an example of how ridiculous some of the arguments were; in the sense that the arguments came close to the DIR stereotype 'if it's not black it's not DIR, and you'll drown'. I've seen quite a few coloured setups here, too :D.

I feel that there's some truth to the whole "black" thing. Sure, it's not written in stone but I've seen people post comments about their black regs and black SPG that "complete the look".

IMO, it starts with the black mask ( for a purely functional reason ) moves on to Twin Jets style fins ( again a purely functional reason ) then moves onto black spg ( possible functional reason in certain scenarios ) and gets a little crazy with things like black first and second stages. Add in your black canisters and choose wetsuits and drysuits that are black and well, there you are.

Pyschologically, it might have to do with the philospohy of less is more. We don't need all these stupid features including color in our gear. We want to have a look that shows we are different from the herd. We are, (wo)men in black. Heck, maybe it's nija inspired also.

Excuse me while I don my flame retardant suit. :) My point in all this is to recognize that of course you don't have to be "all black" to be DIR but it's not exactly crazy for an outsider to notice the trend to go "all black".

In the beginning, all dive gear came in black only. Or damned nearly all.

Nothing elitist about black gear. Easier to satisfy more folks, and cheaper than producing many color options.

If a lot of divers demanded yellow, or pink jet fins you can bet some manufacturers will move to meet the demand. I am pretty sure the basic theory behind standardized gear was not based primarily on color.

I wish more people would wear colored gear, for safety reasons. Brightly colored gear means I can identify the other divers. Especially in places like Monterey where the visibility can be really low, I'd rather see my buddy in bright pink than in concealing black!
