In a panic

if you panic, you're lost

in a panic, you'll revert to instinct and try to dig your way through tons of rock

absence of panic means you can still think. if you can still think, you can get
your buddy's air. once you get air, the emergency is over.

from that point on, it's just problem-solving

Yes, I agree.
But for myself I also know that I would feel better knowing that I had done what I could to minimize the problem-solving that would be required at a moment like this.
Which leads me back to an individual's comfort level, and acceptance of risk.

hmmm... quickest way out of panic i think is to have a buddy make contact with you
and help calm you down.. .barring that, you have to stop and breathe and think

i don't think your equipment plays a role in getting out of panic. that's just mental.

i could be wrong. i've never been in a panic or with someone who was in a panic

i did once calm someone down who was heading towards panic, but that's
different from being in a full-fledged panic

What is this panic from that you guys keep talking about and how does familiar gear prevent it?

Your right, panic is completely a mental issue and things not operating as expected just add to the confusion. As confusion grows so does panic (snowball). It's possible to bring others in to your panic with you in their effort to calm you down. The sooner you can make things go as expected the sooner you are through the panic and can work on the problem solving.

And where do you clip it?

Ouch, I take it personally. ;)
Ever heard of equipment malfunction, freezes and freeflows? :D
Sure have, had a doozy of a freeflow 2 weeks ago. Switched to the bailout, just like I practiced. Sweet.
But a world of pain? How about a stern talkin' to?
