I am trying to put together my first gear package and was wondering about mixing brands of stuff. this is what i was considering:

An XS seair trimetal reg or an aqualung titan micra

a Tusa Duo Air octo/safe second

A Sherwood Wisdom dive computer

and last a Deep Sea Supply backplate BC (i hear DIR guys groanding)

So here is the question:

should i try to get things from the same manufacturer for servicing simplicity, or is it ok to have a mixed package? what are your thoughts?

Thanks!

There are some considerations in mixing certain 1st and 2nd stages, and it's certainly better if all of your reg can be serviced at the same place, including any sort of combined inflator/octo unit like the Tusa since it will need to be serviced annually or whenever specified just like your main reg. But most shops are going to sell and service a variety of brands.

Other than that mix it up and buy what you like, fits your needs, etc. Different manufacturers are known for being good at different things so limiting yourself to one brand isn't really a good idea. A backplate (or any BC for that matter) does not really need service, you can mostly take care of it yourself. If you had a plain inflator anyone could take care of that if it needed it. A dive computer does not usually need service unless the batteries are not user replacable. If something else goes wrong probably nothing the shop can do directly anyway although they might provide a loaner if you bought it from them or send it in for service for you. I definitely wouldn't base a computer choice on my reg brand.

Before you buy any sort of combined octo/inflator search on this board for AIR2 and read up a bit. Some people like these but many people don't, it's worth reading the arguments pro and con.

Nothing wrong with mixing up the stuff... I'd make a subtle change to your setup, but over all - there would be no problem with that mix of gear. I'd probably suggest buying it all from one place that is a dealer for all of it, that way you don't run into the "It's probably not the octopus... it's probably your first stage causing the problem.." Just in case a problem occurs.

Hey Codyjp:
