Breckgirl5, best of luck finding out the cause and a way to overcome it. My worst reverse squeeze ever was around 20'; I'd done a seriously quick maneuvre to get out of range of an attacking Titan Triggerfish. Thought I'd have to stay down forever. Turned out, that unbeknownst to me, I was coming down with a flu/cold. Fortunately for me this was right at the end of the dive portion of my vacation. Unfortunately for me, still had a couple of flights and non-dive portion to get through.
Like you, I equalize in my room, on the way to the boat, on the boat, just before hitting the water, and as ever, equalize early and often during descent. As another poster mentioned, even when not preparing to dive, I equalize just sitting around whilst on land. Doesn't look funny tho' cuz just moving my jaw a bit. At least I don't think anyone has noticed.
