Hello all,
I am going to be in Daytona Beach from May 13th to the 18th and Palm City from the 18th to the 20th. I am looking to get some diving in while I’m down. I was wondering if you have any suggestions, either springs or ocean, on dive sites to hit. I will be the only diver in the group and would love to meet up with some local divers if anyone would be interested. Thanks for you time.

John

Daytona Beach, there is one charter out of that area that I know of. SeaDogs, at www.seadogdiver.com. The closest spring dive to Daytona is Blue Springs, in Orange City. OW depths to ~ 60', and a dive that everyone should do at least once. The vertical shaft, with it's scallped sides, is really interesting and unique. Alexander Springs is a bit further away, and is a much shallower dive, with max depths of 25'.

Let me know if you need driving directions, etc.

I would be interested in Blue Springs but have read that you must have a buddy to dive there. Again, if anyone would be interested in meeting up for a little diving I would be glad to have you. Thanks again.

John

yes, you do need a budy. also, you can't carry a light unless you are cavern certified or above ($125 ticket)

i'd be happy to dive with you on a weekend ... alas, weedays are out

Thanks for you info. Is a 3 mil wetsuit usually sufficient for diving down there (springs or ocean)? Andy, I’ll let you know about a weekend dive. Is there any ocean diving around Palm City or would I be better off heading farther south to Jupiter or some place? Thanks

John

While in Palm City I'd drive down to Jupiter and do a dive there.

Dive with Capt. Paul and the Temptation. It's a flat profile at around 80'. Nitrox is highly recommended. It's a wonderful dive site.

You should PM me closer to when you will be down here. I live in the area and go to Blue Springs a lot just because its a fun cheap dive. If im not in class I'd defintatly be up for a dive there.

i second the drive down to Jupiter. get some coral diving in

you get limestone "reefs" in North-Central Florida, and while interesting, theyr'e not in the same league

Regarding the wetsuit, I did several dives in Blue Springs with a 3mil full suit for my OW class, and while I did get cold, I would say that keeping your dives under an hour and allowing a decent surface interval should make it easily doable.

While ocean temps obviously can and do vary, my guess is that a 3 mil should be sufficient for South Florida in May as well.
