In technical diving, there is a lot made of holding stops. The goal seems to be zero movement in the column. I'm going to through this out as a possible scenario:
Last stop of the dive and buoyancy gets away from me. I'm heading up, so I fully exhale and hold while waiting for my buoyancy to shift. During the time I am holding my breath, a trough passes over and ambient pressure drops.
Can I experience an embolism with a fraction of my tidal volume? I think I can.
