I have a follow up question to my thread on What length are your hoses.
I ordered my hoses; Reg 26", Octo. 40", SPG 26".
Do you need to use anything, like plummers tape on the hose threads, to make sure the hoses to the first stage seal or just screw them in and let the O-ring provide the seal?
Thanks for any advice.

Yes. Not too tightly.

Do not put Teflon plumbers tape on fittings designed for an O ring seal.

Your hose selection sounds fine to me but for the spg sometimes a 29 is easier to read for us older divers.

Think of it as a book where they could have used a bit more ink.
I like elbows on my seconds and routing the primary hose under my arm.

Nemrod. Yeah I tried the 26" out for the SPG, a bit short until I rerouted the hose to go under the arm. I use a 2.5" Hog gauge, better for my old eyes.
Okay, no tape just hand tight and a bit more with the 7/16" wrench.
when I put my ear up to the first stage after turning tank on, I hear a small leak like a very faint crackling sound. Not sure which connection it is coming from, but it is not the HP hose.

Put it in the bath tub and see where it is coming from. If a LP hose is leaking then it needs a new O ring or the correct O ring unless it has a damaged fitting.

Okay thanks everyone. I found the leak. :)
I unscrewed each hose and then carefully inspected the O-ring on each hose to see if I had crushed it, (yes I had overtightened them orginally:dork2:).
Then hand tightened each hose and gave "just a bit" more by wrench.
When I inspected the last hose, the O-ring was mashed and frayed.:shakehead:
Of course my save-a-dive kit only had a few tank O-rings and a few tiny ones (what the heck are these for:idk:), so I took the O-ring off the LP port plug, put it on the hose and handtightened it down with just a little finger touch to the wrench.
Turn the tank on, check with some soapy water and no leak. (learned that from my many bike flats).
So now it's off to the dive shop to pick up a few LP O-rings and a HP one for spares.
I remember when I was in COZ and a guy on the boat had a blown O-ring on his inflator hose, and he had to sit it out, man he was heartbroken.
:( <----he looked like that!

...um, ya might wanna 'build' a basic save-a-dive kit, starting with this neat guide to common O-ring types/sizes used in scuba:
