Based on my results so far with the HC-7, I may go back to my TRV-17. Missed a lot of good footage that my mini-DV setup would have captured without flinchin

Is that because you're still becoming familiar with the nuances of the camera or that it's not doing the job?

I've got the Sony HVR-V1U and like it so far, but wish it's low-light capability were a bit better.

Capturing fast action topside (like sports) can be a challenge as well.

Video Diver... the HC-7 is an incredibly complicated camcorder compared to the TRV-17, and the methods for capturing good HD footage differ from those for mini-DV. I'd have to say I'm still becoming familiar with the camcorder, but also am quite concerned that it may not be able to do the job under the conditions I film in (soCal kelp forests as you know). I can't risk not capturing some of the footage I'm seeing, so I may just switch back until I master the HC-7 (if that's possible for my type of filming). I've seen some very nice footage with the HC-7 posted here, but it was in clear tropical waters with a housing that can WB the HC-7 (which my housing can't do at this time).

My first time at the dive park last weekend. Very nice! First chance to try new gear (bc/reg/suit) in the ocean (no camera yet). Nice weather, easy entry, and everything worked great! Lots of divers already, CDS busy pumping all day. Learned a lot from the Catalina Sticky here, but still looking for more information/recommendations to plan another day, including a day or weekend to recruit uncertified friends that are thinking about getting wet.

bring your friends out for Discover Scuba Diving with CDS, If you can come midweek, any day except Tuesday (cruise ship day) is good. if you can not do mid week, it still can be good but you must reserve well in advance because it gets booked up. $95 per person includes everything except the tip for the instructor :D .

YEP! That's what I'm looking for. I'll get out there on my own during the week, but I'll have to schedule a weekend for my friends. I've been recommending Sport Chalet's free pool tryout days (3rd Saturday of the month) to get new people underwater before going out, but the dive park seems perfect for discover scuba so we may just opt for that. Anyway, looking forward to another day's exploration soon!

Ha... shameless plug for only ONE of the two dive shops on the island. Shame on you! Just kidding. However, I usually mention both shops as possibilities, giving the benefits of each one. Just to make sure this thread is "fair and balanced," SCUBA Luv also does Discover SCUBA.

Is it you T? Or is it J? Whichever, good to see you on SB as well!

Yeah your right Bill, sorry! yes I work for CDS, but Scuba Luv Is a great shop too. either one will be a good choice.

T

I thought it might be you, T. Yep, both shops can give one a good experience. I was just pulling T's leg!
