Ok as some of you know my OW checkout dives are this weekend in a c-c-c-old quarry. I have all my 7mm gear. I cannot figure out how to reconnect the low-pressure inflator hose to my BCD wearing these thick-*** gloves. I can remove it no problem.

Is there a trick? Will this glove compress enough so that I can do this skill? I have no problems doing it without gloves. I also must mention my left thumb is rather poorly due to an inline skating malfunction three weeks ago (I malfunctioned and hit the pavement). I can only practice this skill in the gloves so many times without my thumb going ballistic.

As a last resort I will take the left glove off underwater if I have to and give it to my buddy to hold onto, but I would really like to do it with the glove on if there's a way.

Would appreciate any help or suggestions :D

I always cut my thumb and index finger about 1/2" on my gloves. That why I can grasp it.

Which means that 1/2" on two fingers is going to get no protection, and water will flow in/out of gloves more, but - this is not as important as safetly handling your equipment. Reg & BC problems are the two most indicated pieces of gear in accidents.

Still, I'd pull the glove off, stick it in my BC pocked, fix the gear, and put the glover back on. And for me, I find that I wear a lighter glove than I do wetsuit. Are you sure that your gloves are 7 mil?

Thanks Don, I just checked and they are actually 5 mm. I just assumed they were 7 like everything else I've got. I really don't want to cut them, I wouldn't go that far but thanks for the suggestion Paul. I do have a pair of 3mm gloves and everyone tells me they will not be warm enough for this weekend.

I will probably take it off and demonstrate the skill without it on. I know it's not a dealbreaker.

Thanks for the help guys!

Why would you have to disconnect and reconnect your LPI hose underwater? I don't recall this as one of the OW checkout skills.

My wife and I did our OW check out in the St Lawrence in October (Temp was 60 degrees or so). After day one we both dropped the 7 mm gloves for 3 mm reef gloves. Neither of us had much of an issue with the cold for the lenght of time we were down for check out dives.

Take both sizes of gloves with you. Depending on your tolerance to cold you may be able to get away with the lighter gloves.

BTW...welcome to the frozen chosen brotherhood and sisterhood of the Ontario diver.

Good luck and have fun ion your dives.

You know what Storm, you are right. I just looked through the PADI book and it doesn't mention this as a skill for any of the 4 checkout dives. All this for nothing!

We did cover it in the pool session (without gloves) I just assumed it would be done during checkout.

Well then, don't I feel better :D This was the only thing I was having trouble with, because of the gloves.

Thanks for your good wishes and I can't wait to go diving! I have dives booked in Tobermory and Kingston this summer.

WE did it in mine, and your Inst may well include it in yours. Its a good skill, that I used as a newbie when I got to the wreck at 100 ft and noticed I'd missed connecting it, another time when the screw in part came lose, another few for buddies.

Your body trunk requires more protection than your hands - you wear a jacket without gloves, or a heavy coat with lighter gloves. Take your lighter gloves and try them...
