Hey guys I was out at the Sheridan on Saturday. I was just finishing my second dive on the Sheridan when DeepStops motioned me over towards the Blackthorn. We got to the big marker buoy where there lay a 7ft Roughtail Stingray. He had two venomous spines and one heck of a long tail. He appeared totally unconcerned about DP and I.

Anywhoozle if you are out there I'd definitely recommend having a look in the sand under the buoy to see if he is around. He was a heck of a sight to see!

Yep, I agree, it was a roughtail, not a southern. In the pics, the roughtail has a more pronounced "hump" for it's head while southern is smoother overall. I have a feeling that general area is home for him/her as well. Definitely an impressive specimen at very upper end of their size range. :)

What kind of condition where those wrecks, Ive not seen them since 1994 and was told they were pretty detiriorated, also is there still a marker over the area.. Thanks

The Sheridan is mostly intact. The Blackthorne is scattered. And yes, there's a tethered marker ball near the wrecks. It was at the base of the marker where we saw the big ray.

You'll know you are near the Blackthorn when you start seeing loads of chunks/pieces and the dreaded tires that are all over. As DP said, the Sheridan is the total opposite as it is mostly intact and a wonderful dive.

Brian, when I was looking at the pics, before I even started reading, I saw that head and said "that is it".

Tracy, you know the rules... no pictures... it didn't happen

Yup, rules are rules. Next thing you know she'll see a whale shark on the next dive....:mooner::popcorn:
