I thought the long hose predated "hogarthianism" and was an exley thing?

I think most cavers by necessity used long hoses before HOG. I think it was Bill Main who tried to standardize the wrap around hose, or at least he gets credit for it. And this was before GUE to the best of my knowedge.
A lot of people believe that the entire hose routing and standardizing thing is a DIR (JJ)
creation. (A lot of people also believe a BPW and 7 ft hose make one DIR/GUE. Certainly not the case.)
I have seen a couple photos of Shek Exley and the long hose appeared to be bungied along his cylinder, not wrapped "Hog".

Haven't seen this mentioned, but if you use a long hose, you can't really wear a snorkel. It usually interferes with deployment, and would not be good to have your mask ripped off while deploying the primary in a real OOA.

EDIT: this was covered pretty well, sorry...

Also, I used to use a 48" hose routed under my arm, and that also worked well as an alternative to the "long hose" method. I was primarily concerned with the ability to donate from my mouth, and the ability to easily and reliably find my backup.

As another note, I have a checklist that I have printed out and taped to the back of my BP. You can't read it in the water, but it's a helpful reminder for surface procedures.
