Well, I have a 350D, and am a fairly experienced photographer (i am a photo editor for a small paper, but mainly enjoy just shooting for myself - www.shoelessphotography.com). Unfortunatly, I am in school and have no money - i have seen 1 housing for the 350D (digital rebel XT) but it is 1500 bucks, which I absolutly dont have. I am wondering if anybody out there knows of any cheap alternatives to the hard enclosures out there?

Thanks for any help - for now, I dont see underwater photography being in my near future :(

Sounds like a certain small paper needs new equipment for a special underwater feature article...

Leave the 350D on land and get a cheap camera for underwater. The Canon A series and the Olympus x0x0 are popular choices. Housings for these cameras (made by Canon and Oly) start at $150

haha, good call.

actually, next year i have 4000 to spend on camear gear, but 1. we use Nikon equipment (well, the other photographers do :( ) so I am stick with Nikon gear (I am a Canon fanboy, but I must admit that Nikon stuff is better suited for newspaper stuff)
2. I dont think they'd really see the need for a 1400 dollar housing :)

yeah, that is what it is looking like - I actually just remmembered that my father has an S45, so I might just convince him he needs a housing, and go that route - hopefully that will work out!

Still, I would like to get a housing of some sort at some point :)

Thanks for the replys!

I doubt the paper will budget for UW housings unless you plan on covering a lot of UW events!!

Unfortunately UW DLSR setups are EXPENSIVE. Plan on 5K for a CHEAP setup, double that and more for the more serious DSLR's (D2x, 1D Mark II).

I purchased a PnS Canon S700 + housing for about $550. I still need a UW flash to make it work well UW, but that's a far cry from the cost of a DSLR setup.

well, you are probably right about them not being really happy with me spending 1000 bucks on a housing... oh well.

Anyway, I actually think I am going to buy a housing for my fathers Canon S45, I think that should "do the trick"... at least it will be better than one of the throwaway cameras, plus videos.

Still, if anybody knows of any cheaper "bag" type housings for the 350D, please let me know!

don't do that!!!

this bag housings are ok only as a storage place while the rain is falling and you are above water...
