The shark was caught in 1983.

They are showing a new picture and a new caption now with 1983 in it. Did they disclose it was captured in 1983 with the original article.

Straight from the page you linked....under the picture

From left, Joe Pitruzzello, Greg Dubrule, back to the camera, and Robert Becher, guide a Great White Shark into Cabela's in East Hartford. The shark, originally caught by Dubrule in 1983, was recently restored to its original luster by Pitruzzello, who owns North East Taxidermy Studios in Middletown.........

Ah, that would help explain it then re: protected status. Portions of "Jaws" were filmed right here off Catalina not far from my lab (ever wonder why giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, was present in the waters of the Northeast?). Of course at the time we had no idea what a sensation the movie would cause. The insane reaction to it resulted in the decimation of many shark species in SoCal waters (and elsewhere). Very sad.
