Its often easier to swallow a bit of deco and be able to actually do the dive than gamble on nitrox, end up at a different site and then not be able to do it at all.

I only use nitrox now if its a charter and its 100% certain we're going to a specific site AND if i expect the dive to come up against the NDLs.
For all other situations air is far more flexible (and cheaper).

I believe NAUI Tech has tables for that as well. 28% is also a good Lake Erie mix. For my own reasons of conservatism I use a max of 1.3 working and have v planner set for that, with a 1.6 for deco. In my Intro and Helitrox classes we mixed for the bottom as a buffer. If I were doing the Grove again I'd want a mix for 135 -140, Duane 120. and for me that would be 26% Would most likely not go there but hey. If not using air that is. I don't mind a little deco.

Jim,

Why 1.3??

Yeah, I was wondering why 1.3 also?? Is there some flexibility or safety angle or is it just a personal limit? Please expand.

There have been some cases of tox at 1.4 but iirc few or none at 1.3. Most CCR divers run 1.3 for the bottom if its a long dive. Again if you expect to adjust you should reduce it down.

Reducing bottom pO2 can also help if you expect to run up against a CNS limit on deco - better to use a leaner bottom mix than a leaner deco mix from an efficiency/time point of view.

What purpose have you chosen 28%? If you are Nitrox certified you would have the 32%/36% tables. If you are not diving deeper than 110 feet you could just use 32% because it is easier to get fills.

Maybe he wants to dive deeper than 110ft?
