Poll: Were you OW trained to standards?

I was trained by a cave instructor who was regularly called to retrieve bodies. To say he went beyond standards understates the class. One of the first lessons involved him attaching our tanks and hoses to our deflated bc, with the weight belt as a wrapper. He threw them in the pool, let them...

How can air volume shrink as you go deeper, when the tank itself doesn't shrink?

A SCUBA regulator is designed to provide an air mixture at the ambient pressure of the current depth. The air in the tank is compressed at up to 3000 psi and the breathing gas exits the second stage of the regulator at ambient pressure. Molecules of the air mixture are decompressed to that...

Diving With West End Divers Roatan

Just for reference, depending upon your dive time versus ship arrival time, if you don't find a dedicated driver waiting for you, just get any taxi. My driver didn't show and I had to find an alternate ride.

    What's your backup mask?

I did the same, but the silicone has decayed so they are leaky now. I'll have to find a new model now since that mask is obsolete.

Diving With West End Divers Roatan

I was in Roatan last week. I dove with Roatan Divers, but saw West End's boat. They look to be well run, and far better than the crowded boats the cruise lines had booked.

    New cruise ship pier

Is there a precise location selected? I ask because I dove with my son off the old ironshore public beach just south of San Miguel last summer, and that is the only relatively open area between the existing docks. We saw trunkfish, balloonfish, and a scorpionfish along with plenty of urchins...

    Fantastic dives from UAE

Several years ago, I drove from Dubai in a rental car to a small dive operation on the Oman coast near Shark Island. Lots of interesting things to see, but I don't know if that is still an option. I used Al Boom Diving.

Passport Renewal time - TODAY's DATE - FYI

Hey Johnoly, long time no see. Your passport turnaround beat mine by a day and I live a lot closer to Dallas.

    Remember your first dive?

I dove the La Ceiba airplane wreck. 20 minutes of the basics on the beach with a divemaster then into the water for a half hour dive. I didn't equalize fully, so my ears were full the next day, but I knew then I wanted to get certified.

    Breathing Enriched O2 for health

My DM instructor had some health issues from being slightly bent once rescuing somebody, and used up partial nitrox tanks at the bottom of their pool on a regular basis. I can't prove it helped, but he claimed it did.

looking for something different to do top side

Xel Ha park on the mainland is a good beach/snorkel spot. If I had a couple of days I would definitely do a cenote dive.

    43 years old depth gauge...

Makes me feel better about my almost vintage gear I am still using.....

    Deep outdoors gear.

I tired the Matrix; well-built, but I didn't like the double straps on the waist. I ended up getting the Freedom plate, which I really like. The 40# wings I got are really only good for singles, so I will need to get another set sometime soon. I also got a DiveRite back pad, which I put a hole...

For computer users only... safety stops.

I do minimum of 3 minutes to satisfy my Suunto, then let all others in the group currently on the line or hang bar board, and then ascend VERY slowly to the surface (appx 10' minute max). This likely gives me more than 5 minutes, but I've never timed it exactly.

    Deep stops and ascents...

I do a deep stop of one to two minutes if the dive exceeds 100 ft for more than 5 minutes, especially square profile dives. In addition, when I am on a dive that meets this criteria, I spend a good five minutes or more on my safety stop.

Anyone Been to Twin Lakes Lately?

Still too chilly for me. Give it another month, and it will be mid-70's.

    Computer instead of Dive Table?

My advice is to learn the tables, on your own if necessary. Even if you buy a computer, you could end up out on a boat or in a remote area and have your battery die, for example. A computer is a great labor saving device, but you need to know the process behind those numbers. I've used...

    What BC do you use?

I have a DeepOutdoors BP/W that I love (except for the too-long inflator hose), and for basic recreational diving/backup have an Oceanic Chute II. I always want the air behind me, would never buy a jacket style - and after buying the BP will likely never buy a BC again.

Trip to Lake Conroe Tx. any takers?

I wouldn't bother with Conroe. If you want to dive a Texas lake, go to Travis in Austin - Windy Point is set up for diving, and there are actually things to see.
