What should I get for a metal detector?

Thanks, I guess it will make me a master of buoyancy control. Looking forward to it.

What should I get for a metal detector?

I'd like to follow up this question with: "What equipment should I get besides the metal detector?". When the detector "hit" something, you want to get it out of the ground without stirring up too much dirt. Do you use a colander? Any tips? Is there a book "Scuba metal detection for...

Have You Outgrown Your Dive Shop?

Yes and yes. Incidentally, the shop just went out of business the other week. But since I know bad "shop-culture" from other hobbyist area of interests, when I took up diving I made sure not to get "into it" from the start, so I'm fine doing my own s***.

Taiwan diver dies during solo night dive

With these reports, I simply cannot believe the diver ran out of air. He might have had a free flow, or leak, that led to an emergency situation from which he could not recover. But I cannot believe that they just run down the air clock like Sonic the hedgehog in an underwater level and then...

Pony bottle: Remove first stage after dive?

Do I need to unscrew the first stage of my pony bottle after a dive or can I leave it there. I think that after releasing the pressure, water could sip into the first stage air canal if I stored the pony bottle with a wet first stage attached. Right? On the other hand, the first breath of air...

Question about “balanced rigs” and having all ballast unditchable

River and current diving: If your gear got entangled, the force of the current can easily prevent you from untangling yourself. You doff your gear and go to the surface CESA-style. I like how someone else in this thread put it: Unless you have dived in all of the 7 seas of the world, so to...

Airline losing all the gear + mitigating the risks next time

In which case, you were doing the job of the airport personnel. I suppose that if they came across a bag that is clearly labelled to go to another airport, they'd say "what is this thing doing here?" and send it on its way. In the (admittedly probable) case that the staff does not give a f...

Airline losing all the gear + mitigating the risks next time

I would advise against GPS tracking because: a) you're not doing the job of the police b) it tracks the location of the tracker, not your regs. Just a lot of effort and money on your part, once the equipment is outside your country you're out of luck.

Does scuba gear often seem severely overpriced ?

still, if any of you tried to make a competing product, you couldn't beat these prices I'm sure.

    First solo dives!

Technically, this was not part of training in OW or AOWD class. Neither does PADI's buddy check procedure involve checking for cutting tools. Lots of places where things can go wrong. They should change their mantra from "Never dive alone" to "Think before you dive!". I'm just trolling...

An appropriate inspiratory flow pattern can enhance CO2 exchange

I stumbled upon this study from 2016 and thought it might be of interest to the community: https://academic.oup.com/bja/article-pdf/117/2/243/18275078/aew194.pdf Now I can't say how this translates to scuba diving. My takeaway is that given a fixed breathing cycle and volume, it is best to...

    First solo dives!

going solo is no excuse for disregarding accepted security practice.

    I've been set free!!! Solo

To be fair, this is an underrated security aspect in these sports. In my group we remind our buddies to be very careful when riding alone. With an enduro motorcycle, you can very easily reach spots where nobody else ever goes, and there's lots of ways to screw up yourself, the bike, or a...

The device that could save your life?

Apart from all the "OMG it's going to fail!!" there's still a valid point to be made. Thank you for actual accounts on this matter!

The device that could save your life?

That's actually a very clever low-tech solution! (the air depth record aside)

Thanks for all the links, very interesting to read.

The device that could save your life?

As a solo diver you would ideally have analysed all dangers of a given dive and taken appropriate actions to mitigate these risks. This includes being in perfect physical and mental state on the day of your dive, such that you would be able to quickly and unambiguously notice if your body tells...
