If the TTL uses cables then turn off the flash. Using the built in flash firstly draws power and more importantly will highlight backscatter if there are suspended particles. The idea of external flashes is to light from the side and reduce reflection from particles.

The only issue with GPS in this setting is that water attenuates the satellite signal to the extent it's not usable under water. The only way around this is an external aerial on a float, which simply adds to the complexity.
