Trip Report Emerald Dive Charters Trip Report

I was all set to do this dive through Emerald Dive Charters, but doing some research, I discovered several very unsettling facts about Randy Jordan - the captain and owner: 1. He was the guy I read about here a few years ago who lost a finger to a puffer after try to get it to inflate for some...

Looking for info about diving the BHB

My buddy and I are starting to plan a long weekend dive trip to WPB and we'd like to dive the bridge. Since neither of us has done it before, I'm looking for advice. I think I read that you need to do it at slack tide, and I have a feeling that some who live in the area may have some...

Death in Cocos from shark attack

I suspect that there are complex reasons why this shark attack occurred. We may never know or understand the variables. The story of the grizzly man and his girlfriend who were killed on Kodiak Island likely stem from misunderstanding and misinterpreting available data. As I recall, he has...

2016 Barracuda Near Attack, looking for causes, behavioral analysis

In my personal experience it is very common for barracuda to follow divers. I have had large individuals follow me around for 20-30 minutes at a time. I have wondered if perhaps they had been fed a tasty lion fish at some point and now associate divers with food, but that’s pure speculation...

    Diver Panic (Video)

There is a lot of speculation and blame in the responses here. Went to the Youtube page and the poster was the diver actively trying to help the panicked diver. He says in answer to a question in the comments that they were all separated from the dive leader due to poor visibility, so there's...

    Cobalt 1 button problem

    Cobalt 1 button problem

Pulled my Cobalt out to get the serial number for insurance - glad I did - I discovered that one of the magnetic switches is non-functional. I replaced all the magnets a few months ago and it has been working perfectly ever since - no issues on my last dive about 6 weeks ago, but the back...

Do I need a Dive Master as a new OW certified?

Visiting Florida on second week of June

If you have the option, flying into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale will get you a lot closer to the keys and the excellent diving there. Flying into Orlando and driving to the keys will mean that you spend more than 10 hours round trip to get to Key Largo and back. One way on the turnpike is 4 hours...

    Accident in Belize

This is a strange case because the accident apparently went unreported to local authorities, the diver was evacuated back to the US for treatment where it is reported that he later died. Here's a link to the article: Diver Succumbs to Injuries; Boat Captain Fails to Report Accident to...

New SB.com member - Info on equipment for my 14 daughter.

As others have mentioned here and in other forums, while BP/W configurations are very popular with a large number of advanced divers, (especially cold water divers), you mention Cozumel, and I wonder if your 14yo would be more comfortable bobbing at the surface after a drift dive waiting to be...

Good Back Up Light under $50

Somebody mentioned the DGX 600 from Dive Gear Express (https://www.divegearexpress.com/lights/backuplt.shtml#3806). I just bought one of these and I was shocked at how bright it is. I have been using a UK C400 LED Pistol-Grip light as a primary, and was shocked at how much brighter this...

Planned air sharing/Hose of shame to extend bottom time

I may be late to the party, but when doing deep dives with a dive operator, I will often ask in advance for HP100's. My SAC stays around .53, which is higher than I'd like, but with the steel 100's I can get in a decent dive time, even at depths between 80-110 ft. EAN 32 is my friend!

Trip Report from Carpe Vita Explorer

Thanks for the report. I met one of the people who own/manage the Carpe Diem and Carpe Vita in Honduras a couple of years ago, and have been intrigued by the idea of doing a trip with them ever since. Your report is well-written and just what I was looking for. I might have to pull the...

future diver with some gear questions

Looks like you have had a lot of advice! And a lot of it contradictory... One thing for certain - you will probably look back later and think, "if I only had all this experience when I decided to invest in my gear, I would have done xxx differently." But you have to HAVE the experience to know...
