    ProPls II H2O contacts bridged

My ProPlus 2 is constantly reading as if it is immersed in water. This behavior (reads H2O on top, constantly resetting after a 2 hour countdown) is described in the owner's manual, the solution being to soak it good and dry it again. I've soaked it several times and dried it out for a...

    Maui dive ops

We're here now, and dove yesterday with Ed Robinson's. They were very helpful about some gear issues (airline snafu, the airline didn't at first think our gear would show up, I was able to call the Ed Robinson booking office right before they closed and arrange for rental gear, eventually I...

If you had the opportunity to do DM training for free....

I did my DM for free through work, and will be getting my instructor status in a year or two, and hopefully a coast guard six pack captain's license after that. Its been worth it so far, and an instructor and CG license may be the foundation of a nice little retirement job.

    Maui dive ops

Its looking like we will go with Ed Robinson, partially because we can get a break on the price through a tour outfit we're doing non diving stuff with. Also the advanced dives he has appeals to us.

Giant Stride with Fins or Not

I giant stride in without fins all the time. When I'm wearing a Superlite 17b commercial diving helmet, trailing a surface supply line, am intentionally over weighted, have no way to control my bouyancy, and intend to walk around on the bottom when I get there. My tender is trained (as I...

    Maui dive ops

Will be in Maui week after next for a week with my family, two of them are divers, one brand new. I'm pretty experienced. We want to dive with an operator working from or near the Kihei boat ramp because this is very near our hotels. From the searching I've been doing here, its looking...

    Nitrox for the PS diver

Why multiple short dives? We, a surface supply air recovery team, strive for the longest bottom times we can, but our SOP is one dive per diver per day. In less than 30 feet 2-4 hour bottom times are typical. Part of this is that swapping divers on a SSA rig is quite a time investment. We...

    Is a computer actually necessary?

I have to assume that since I can rebuild a transfer case, a mechanic is not necessary. For anyone. We obviously will not agree on this. The thousands vacation only, used the tables once in OW class divers who keep the manufacturers in business are all sheep. Baaa. And someone who...

What to do with the Dog when diving?

If you take your dog with you its another piece of topside property for someone to steal or screw with while you're in the water. Find a way to leave him at home. For long trips we kennl our dogs, for short trips we home-board, meaning a dog walker comes three times a day.

    Is a computer actually necessary?

Yes but not less. A computer is running the tables for you in real time, and thus allows you more bottom time in a typical warm water tropical recreational dive, which are virtually always multi level. You presume that all computer divers, including myself, engage in no dive planning at...

    Who dives with 2 computers?

Consider "vacation saving redundancy." This is why I dive two computers. I know I could just safely ascend as my recreational dives are no D dives. If a computer fails, however, you're not diving for the rest of the day (at least) or the the rest of the vacation. Don't start with "I'd dive...

    Is a computer actually necessary?

You're comparing apples and oranges. The fact that the computer works faster and more accurately than you has nothing to do with that fact that different tables and different computers varying their conclusions in the same profile. Just like PADI tables are more conservative than Navy tables...

    Is a computer actually necessary?

I think I understand. I understand that my dive supe, and not me, is calculating my bottom time, depths, and deco profile (if any) for a reason on a work dive. I have other stuff to do down there. Similarly, I have other stuff to do on a common warm water AL80 recreational dive. I don't...

Do I want redundant gauges with dive computer?

Carry a mini spg in your save a dive. From what I've seen the major failure point on wireless rigs is the transmission. If that goes you still get nitrogen loading and depth data. So if the trans goes, swap in the SPG and continue to dive as a non-integrated computer.

    So Terrified Of Crotch Strap!!!

The only problem I have ever seen was when I had to attach a haul rope to the rescue D ring on a buddy's navy harness for him to be hauled 30 feet up the side of a ship to the deck. He was wearing a commercial hard hat and 30 pounds of lead at the time. He said the crotch strap in the navy...

    Is a computer actually necessary?

If you're diving a typical recreational AL80 tropical moderate to (non tech) depths just get a computer. Your profile will be all over the place in terms of depth and you'll get more bottom time. You can spend the dive looking at the computer every once in awhile instead of recording depths...

Funniest Diving quotes you have heard

There are computers out there that have altitude sensors in them (for diving at altitude) that do not like to be powered up in an airplane. I had mine lock out both on the way to and from a dive location when I had to power it up to get past security. It didn't matter so much becuase it...

    Dive operators in Hawaii

Kona - Jack's Diving Locker was good. Kauai - Fathom Five was good. Make sure you do a shore dive called Tunnels.

    Dive ops on Molokai?

Due to vacation logistics regarding non-dive activities, we are spending the whole week on Maui. We are going to do a good amount of diving with B&B, but are there dive ops that regularly go to Molokai? Perhaps the Lahaina area? Also are there any dive operators in the Hana area?
