Excellent interview of JJ (president, GUE)

The GUE instructors I met acted much like JJ. They were Andrew Georgititus, Mike Kane, and Dan Mackay). There was no arrogance or confrontational attitudes what-so-ever. They were soley committed to answering questions and being challanged. They can prove why they are right and have you...

LP 95 too heavy if wet?

Speaking of more steel, I heard a rumor that PST is going re-rate their tanks to 3500psi. Everyone is filling them to 3500 anyway (not that I would do such a thing  ). I was wondering if any of you dealers, or others in the loop, heard anything about that. Mike

Diving On A Newly Discovered Wreck

I had to edit my post there a bit. I had a Freudian slip. I wrote that I thought it was the Gertrude, but I meant to say the Dolphin. The Gertrude was carrying corn. The Dolphin was 119' long that was built in 1862 and sunk in 1869 making it a very old wreck. It reportedly sunk after a...

Diving On A Newly Discovered Wreck

It's not every day that I'm able to dive a newly discovered shipwreck. A few weeks ago, a shipwreck was discovered in the Straits of Mackinaw during a search and recovery mission in the Straits. Perhaps a mile east of the bridge lays on old wooden schooner barge carrying coal in 120' of water...

Is cave diving the most dangerous sport?

Most dangerous, or the least forgiving? I suspect most people mean that it's one of the least forgiving sports out there. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but I don't particularly care to find out :D. Mike

    Apeks DS4 hose routing

I traded a TX100 for my ATX50/DS4, and though I don't regret it, I'll probably go back to TX100's for my doubles. I like the hose routing a bit better, and with the longer Sherwood knobs (which I don't have yet), there will be plenty of room to grasp the knobs. Six to one.... Mike

    Apeks vs Atomics

It would be tough to beat the TX50/DS4 anyway, much less for the price you can get them for at DiveINN. I don't worry about warranties either. Mike

    Apeks DS4

It will be fine. The only time you would want to adjust it out of the box is if you were diving in very cold water or trimix (if you wanted). Mike

    Tank boot..yes or no??

I agree with Campana regarding the bad habits of some people leaving their tanks standing up. Boots seem to facilitate that bad habit. I don't use boots on any of my tanks and the charter boat I use doesn't care, though some charters get kinda cranky, I hear. Mike

LP 95 too heavy if wet?

Double steel tanks with a wetsuit can lead to problems, but not a single (with a thick wetsuit). Mike

You too. I'm fixin' for a weekend of diving. :) Mike

    My wife, OW, and DIR?

Hey Mike, One more thing, why is it that you can't charge what you're worth as an instructor and make money? Because prospective students can go down the street and get it done cheaper and faster. This is what I'm talking about. I'm all for you guys making money, as long as the students...

    My wife, OW, and DIR?

Agencies Equipment manufacturers Resorts Dive Shops Charter operators All of these groups benefit from massive amounts of student certifications. If standards were subtantially elevated, there would be fewer divers and less money. My take, Mike

    My wife, OW, and DIR?

Mike, Mike, Mike, The reason GUE OW classes will likely have lower enrollment is because they will cost more, take longer, etc... People want the resort course, and by golly, PADI and others will be happy to oblige them. Here's what I know about dive training at large: it fails miserably...

    My wife, OW, and DIR?

Greg, I'm not trying to convert anyone to anything. Take my opinions with a grain of salt if you wish. I couldn't care less. I couldn't care less about the supposed "standards" of an agency like PADI (or most of the others). I care about quality training. Period. If it matters, I've...

    What ends your dive?

Yeah, it's a mix depending on the dive. Mike

    My wife, OW, and DIR?

Butch, I share Roakey's frustration with the entire industry as well. All one has to do is step back and open their eyes to see what's going on. I'll openly recognize good divers, good gear manufacturers, good instructors, and good agencies when they deserve it. I have no vested interest...

    My wife, OW, and DIR?

Cathie, I understand what everyone here is saying, but we're talking about a stupid snorkel here! The guy sacrificed requiring the use of a snorkel (a snorkel!!) for demonstrating proper trim, proper buoyancy control, long hose air sharing, and proper buddy skills. These are things that are...

    My wife, OW, and DIR?

Mike, GUE's OW class is in the works. There are a few things that will happen for sure: Enrollment will be low Standards will be high Graduates will be better divers I'll bet my snorkel on that! I started this thread to share how a good instructor could take a relatively...
