The water temperature estimate was a bit high, so the shop put me in a new 5mm wetsuit. I asked about a hood, but the other divers said it wasn’t needed. In retrospect, I should have taken a 7mm with hood. It was a bit cold at the end, and the CDS warm showers were very appreciated. Next time I’m back I plan to stay longer to dive a bit more and bring my drysuit.
I can't imagine ever diving in Catalina without a 7mm and hood, and I'm pretty cold tolerant. That's surprising to me that they didn't give you that. It's a great place to dive, though! Glad the son didn't run into trouble while on his impromptu solo dive. Thanks for sharing!

I definitely agree here. I don't know anyone who wouldn't recommend a 7mm and hood for the area. It's been warmer recently, but still gets pretty cold after a while under.

Live and learn, the other divers on a dive prior to mine and who went out again with me all said a 5 mm without hood was good enough. Next time, I’m diving dry with hood and dry gloves.
