Sometimes is not practical having the mask donned, but even thought I always clip them in my harness d-ring.
If you cannot keep it donned, I agree that pocket or clipped or both is a good idea. What are situations where it’s not comfortable for you to keep it on?

Clip the back of the mask strap to a retractor.

I do some long surface swims and hate wearing a mask on the surface. So, I’m constantly putting on and taking off my mask at the surface . But I use a combo mask/fin strap that’s only come undone once in hundreds of dives (operator error- didn’t fully insert the buckle and found my mask lying halfway up the beach.) Depending on the dive I’ll stash it in my pocket while I’m underwater

Although, for boat diving I just leave my mask on the entire time I’m in the water

And as you are learning it is equally expensive to keep losing your masks. Keep it on your face or under your chin until you are out of the water. Anywhere else, a pocket, a tether, a retractor, a piece of kite string, it will get eventually lost without your knowing. On your face where it belongs or under your chin, you will notice right away it has gone off and grab it before it goes away.

I started using a mask lanyard in 1978. Haven't lost a mask in the past 47 years. Before that I'd lose at least one mask per year. My 2psi.

As has been mentioned above keeping your mask on or tethered is your best SOP. But if you still want the mask to be buoyant replace the strap with a neoprene (wet suit material) strap.

I was taught a long time ago that when I'm in the water.... if the mask is not on my face, then it's around my neck (under my chin), or less preferred looped on my arm if I need to get it off my neck for some odd reason.

I had to bite my lip a few times when my family was recently going through tehir OW class and I was doing the refresher class along side... at that shop they have a routine that if they see a mask on a forehead they immediately go into freak mode splashing the diver and screaming "Diver diver, are you ok?" over and over....
Meanwhile all the folks that were in the "in-group" when resting on the surface would put their masks on the back of their head with the strap on the forehead.
To me I thought it looked a little silly...like trying too hard to be cool... and I fail to see how a mask on the smooth back of the head is ok, but changing it 180° so the mask is on the smooth forehead is somehow not ok.

I usually dive with double tanks, and recently I'm going to dive in a friend of mine's small RIB boat with no ladder so I have to doff my gear before to jump into the boat.
You need to doff your double tanks.
Nothing manadates taking of the mask before you sit on a sofa at home.

My experience is a much greater tendency to fog a mask on the front as my forehead warms/humidifies that air. In rougher conditions, on the face is the best place (preserving vision), or possibly around my neck.
