My quandary is whether the Go+heavier wallet is the better backup package than the 3.1.
Because of the Go+ lower initial cost, the shorter length or the lighter weight (or a combo of the aforementioned)?
 
You can just buy the additional warp cores and longer tube.

I acknowledge that’s an option but I really like the Genesis’ feature of being able to go for long periods without having to break the seal. I can foresee having the 3.1 for Florida boat dives and flying with it and the 3.2 that’s dedicated to Florida caves. If I were to swap back and forth, I’m right back into the principal drawback of the PTB DPVs.

Easy to say on a Sunday that I’ll just get another DPV when my wife’s not asking for a new car or my daughter’s not asking to attend Georgetown right as I decide to totally retire.

I think that is a totally valid question. I have a G2.1 and I keep thinking about selling my BlackTip and then buying a Go+. For MOST of my scootering, the Go+ would do the job just as well as my G2.1 - all while being shorter and lighter.

And, while I am not yet Cave DPV trained, when I do finally get that done, I still don't foresee doing big enough cave dives that I would need a G3.2. But, I *could* see myself using the G2.1 and towing a Go+ as a backup.

The Go+ also charges without opening the hull. And it does not use PTBs.
 
You know you’ve become a lonely ScubaBoard junkie when you start quoting yourself.

I’ve decided to purchase a Genesis 3.1 with the Sentry gauge from Deep 6 Gear.

I was fortunate to talk with a diver who has owned multiple models of SUEX, Seacraft and Genesis DPVs and has put them through some pretty righteous trials on recreational, normoxic and hypoxic OC and CCR profiles. His technical testimony, comparative analysis with other brands and general experience with the Genesis (he owns three of them) were compelling.

He’s confident the 3.1 will satisfy all my long dive objectives until I’m ready for DPV Cave at which time a 3.2 will be appropriate. Since C2 and then DPV Cave are quite a ways off, I’m feeling pretty good that I’m not at risk of frustrating back-to-back purchases.
Congrats for your choice. It would be great if you could share some of the hi sights from your friend. I noticed that most people / shops buy a brand of DPV and then are faithful for life which makes a comparative analysis from somebody who owned multiple brands very valuable.
 
Never met the guy (referral from Landon / D6G) but I think @VsubT and I are going to link up with him sometime in the future to get to know some of his routes. When I do, I'll take more detailed notes.

Below are things that jumped out at me about his preference for Genesis during the conversation:
  • Consistent performance
  • Confidence in range and reliability - the user cited some pretty wicked shore-to-wreck dives in Florida and long range coastal exploration dives in Bonaire
  • Easy to assess battery health and ability to pinpoint weak / weakening cells (application)
  • Use friendly ability to replace those cells
  • Function and fit before aesthetical form*
*This is definitely a subjective area concerning taste. Some people like Toyota FJ80 Land Cruisers, some people like Range Rovers.

SUEX and Seacraft users will cite the same things above about their DPV.
 
I'm not circling back to this thread to gloat over my new Genesis 3.1 purchase but I had reason to go to the Dive Xtras website for some BlackTip info and thought I’d look around. I'm struck that Dive Xtras has extended the use of PTBs to their CUDA series.

Apologies if I'm three years late to the topic.

That seems like a strategic error in the exploration-grade DPV market. Their CUDA Exploration model runs $7,300 BEFORE purchasing PTBs. If I'm spending that much on an exploration grade scooter and I have to buy PTBs, I'm going to want two sets of PTBs. Four DeWalt 12 Ah batteries cost $1276. Probably need a two-bank charger - another $109.

For the BlackTip series, having to crack open the DPV to charge the PTBs is an acceptable trade off given the relatively modest cost of entry and exponential jump in capability.

But $8685 for all the above and I'd STILL have to be in and out of the CudaX?

Big fat "no thanks".
