Martin gave me the heads up last November when he was out in the Red Sea, and now they are available on his website along with a nifty box that provides the power for the cell so it can be mounted in a T piece, and the circuit boards etc to read the cell and interpret it for a Shearwater to be able to read it via Fischer cable. Martin from Tecme is about to fly out to Egypt for the Silent Week rebreather event, so please maybe best to wait a few weeks before everyone bombards him with emails.
 
Has anyone heard about support from Shearwater?
I've asked reps about it in person and online several times over the past couple years - crickets. So they're either working on it and keeping quiet or completely uninterested. Would be great if someone could get an update from the company.

Nothing yet. Hopefully by DEMA this year they will support them (probably with a new model) without the need for an "adaptor".

I will look at it as a viable option if I were buying new, probably not worth it as just an upgrade. When I ordered up my rebreather years ago I splurged for the NERD knowing I would not spend the money later as an upgrade. Same thing for solid state sensors. I would buy them as an initial upgrade, but not going to pull a perfectly good Petrel to do an upgraded one.

I would really like to see the sensors supported directly and skip the convertor box. That feels like a stop gap fix to me. Let the new cells work with antique systems. Has me thinking of the early 80s when they were running computer controlled carburators. It filled the gap for a couple years and went away.
 
From the Tech.me website, it looks like they are selling a "converter box" that would allow you to connect the solid-state cells to existing computers such as Shearwater. The cells, being digital, likely need DC current supplied to function. Standard O2 cells are actually tiny fuel cell batteries and generate current of their own. The tech.me box likely has a lithium battery to supply the cells and a circuit board that converts the cell's digital output to the typical analog voltage ranges output by standard O2 cells. This would enable Shearwater to function normally.

And this is spot on - that extra box both supplies the power to the cells as well as converts the digital signal to analog, and then any electronics, like DiveSoft or Shearwater, can read it as it receives the very same signal as it would have when using "analog" cells.
And you literally plug the computer there directly.

You can also use the above approach with the DiveCan interface, just then need an extra cable and possibly an extra hole, as computer cannot be plugged directly into the extra box, instead this need to be ran back to OBOE/SOLO. You can see the two mini-molex connectors where you plug the solid state in and two "normal" molex connectors, which you plug in in place of your analog cells, so the signal goes via this box and back into "regular" one. (Note that this also can be used for 4 Pin, depends on whether you have the additional "cable gland" thingie it seems)

But this is the part where Shearwater needs to actually do something (that is if i understand correctly....) - while one can use it as is, its kinda strange as digital signal is first converted to analog and then converted back to digital (as DiveCan is digital as opposed to 4 Pin). So would be great to get rid of all those converters and be able to have signal going straight from cells direct to the SOLO/OBOE board. That might require some re-design of the electronics (as in the connector part) but rest should be just firmware update i.e. just tell the darn thing what to do with those 0's and 1's, that's about it. Unless one could also integrate extra power needed in the existing boxes, then that would also eliminate the need for the extra box.

So let's see how long that one takes.....pinged Dive Rite about it months ago, they spoke with Shearwater apparently but radio silence since...
 
I guess the Tecme solution is a good option for those of us that don't want to wait until the actual rebreather manufacturers get onboard with solid state cells as it allows us to easily have a solid state cell feeding to say a Nerd2 without having to wait for the manufacturers to do their stuff etc - and remember for those manufacturers whose rebreathers are CE it will probably mean going through the CE testing again :-( - and it doesn't involve needing to send the head back to the manufacturer for modification etc. - often times quick to implement but not absolutely 100% ideal is better than having to wait 2 years for the ideal solution - which will eventually come anyway...
