Have you ever used aluminum metal spray as a primer? We used that on bells in the North Sea. The rough surface finish held epoxy paint well and acted as an anode.
Never heard if it.
I thought of looking into hot dip galvanizing too, but that could get pricy.
I don’t know where to even start to find someplace that does it. May have to go to Oakland or Sacramento.

Found this on Google.

Ha ha, I know Ron Stevens the owner. We worked at a body shop together in Santa Rosa back in the 1980’s.
Gilardi’s was a famous chrome shop that did a lot of award winning chrome work on hot rods back in the day.

Well, it’s all ready. Past hydro no problem. Next step is to brush up the inside then I’ll get a new valve and get it filled.
I used zinc on it then I burnished it. It has a nice sheen.

i usually check craiglist often here on maui. i happened on this lot of 6 tanks for $100. AL 80,63 and 50 and 3 steel LP 72’s! DOB for the 72’s were 75, 74 and 67. all plus rated and all passed hydro plus rated. the born on 75 has that epoxy outside that just breaks off and straight steel underneath. already got my galvilite for a weekend project. i already stripped the other tanks and they came out so pretty. my new sidemount setup here for the islands. I’ll sell the AL 80 and 63 for a hundred a piece and make a nice profit.

You did good on that deal!
It’s a little work and you have to have the tools and know-how, but aluminum tanks all polished out look crazy cool. If you do it right and keep the heat down it won’t affect the metallurgy one bit. They actually stay cooler in the sun and resist corrosion from salt water because bare aluminum breathes and the polished surface doesn’t allow anything to grip on and get started. I did this to a few AL’s I had years ago. All I needed to do after the initial machine polishing was use a little aluminum wheel polish by hand every once in a while to keep them up.
The Zepher Pro 40 system works excellent.

I just stripped a pair of 72's, used a wire wheel in an angle grinder. Took about 15 mins per tank.
