If you're in the US sometimes you find a piece of gear significantly lower priced from an overseas dive shop but often times the shipping kills the deal. The dollar has been on a steady uptrend lately which has made things in little more interesting. Couple that with the fact that some overseas shops are not subject to some of the price fixing restraints we see from manufacturers in the states, and you end up with even more leverage. If you're looking at a $50-100 dollar item, maybe not worth playing this leverage game. But if you can save $1,000 on a $3,000 drysuit and it costs $100 in shipping, well, that's a bit different lately. The exact example is something I'm an keeping my eye on, especially if it's a situation where, if something goes wrong with the gear, it would normally be handled by the manufacturer vs the shop itself.

Example of a transaction I just made as an experiment... looking at some premium masks. Found one that would normally retail and be subject to US price fixing at around $190. Found it on sale, and with the exchange rate, for $50 at an overseas shop. Even with $23 in shipping it was $73 out the door or about a $117 discount. I won't mention particular shops but did a quick search here and some of our overseas friends said they had good experience with the shop. I already got an email from them saying it was shipped in less than 24 hours.

Any thoughts?

I have bought lots and lot of dive gear from EU and UK online dealers. I have saved thousands doing it this way and honestly shipping is not that expensive if you are placing a large order. Plus if your shipping to the US you do not have to pay any VAT also the US has no import tax on diving equipment. Never had any issues I have ordered everything from mask, miflex hose's, and regs, up to big ticket items like dry suits, rebreathers, etc.

How do you know which overseas shops are trustworthy? Is it a word of mouth kind of thing?

Some of it is word of mouth or if you have actually been to the there shop in person while on holiday, others is just as simple as looking up dealers the manufacture list. It is assumed that if the manufacture is listing them as a dealer then they would a reputable shop.

Some of the shops I have used in the past that I have had no issues with and would recommend and call trustworthy are:
The World of Rebreather & Technical Diving Products | Narked at 90 (They ship DHL or regular UK snail mail)
O'Three Custom Drysuits (super good to work with shipping to the US via DHL, even put a nice note in your box, stickers, a hat, and candies)
Deepstop - Diveshop for scuba divers - Deepstop GmbH (They ship DHL, sometime have really good deals on MK25's or DST's & DS4's)
SF-1 ScubaFreaks (ship regular mail)
Shop for Scuba Diving, Tech Diving, Underwater Photo, Swimming, Freedive - Gidive Store (Ship via UPS)
Diveinn | Online Shop für Tauch- und Schnorchelausrüstung (Ship regular mail)
The ONLY Specialist Apeks Site in the UK. In stock for fast despatch. (keep an eye on this site sometime they have killer sales on Apeks regs)
The biggest diveshop in Europe (Ship regular mail or DHL)
Fourth Element - Equipment for Adventure - Technical Diving (actually just placed an order with them today and they only charged £11.50 for DHL international shipping for top and bottom undergarments)
Potápěčské centrum Divers Direct (They ship FedEx)

And lastly Martin from Tecme Rebreather, Parts, Service, unique solutions he will ship regular post for really cheep or send things DHL for really reasonable prices.

. . . also the US has no import tax on diving equipment

Huh? You mean "duty"? Posters in this thread and others on the topic have said we have been asked to pay import duty to FedEx, UPS, etc.

@Marie13 , any idea what marsh may be referring to?

There are tariff numbers for water sports equipment and regulators/rebreathers that are duty free. Drysuits and wetsuits will get duty. Exposure protection is considered to be garments so they’re not eligible for the tariff numbers that are duty free.

Marsh brought in a rebreather within the past year that I gave him some advice on. That didn’t have any duty.

I could probably read hundreds of pages of posts and find this answer out but I wonder what the typical issues are with the SeaSkin suits if any that people have. For me, if they are DYI fixes in general that one can take care of with basic skills and little cost, I would definitely consider it an exception. If on the other hand, they are workmanship or design issues, that's another story entirely.
If it's something small like a leaking seam between boot and suit, Seaskin will probably tell you to find local shop that can repair it and they will foot the bill. At least, that's how it was in the past.
I had a small leak on my right QCS ring where seam is. Fixed it myself by just putting some cement glue on both sides to close the gap. And before you think negative of Seaskin quality, I must say that I might be responsible for that, since I had problems with removing Rolock dry gloves rings and did some stupid things while trying. Notified Seaskin, just so they know, not expecting anything. Got response within hours from the boss himself, thanking me for helping them improving their QC.

I have ordered things like xdeep bolt snaps from overseas, but have been eyeing cheap scubapro regs and a dry suit...I do worry that my local shop will somehow be able to tell I got it overseas and refuse to work on it...

Are you sure the overseas SP will be able to ship to the US? There are sometimes geographical restrictions on sales.

the order process lets me get all the way through to pay now...I see no indication they wouldn't...
