It's a 6351 and my LDS can do the eddy current. An extra $25 for the NDT every 5 years is negligible. I actually am more likely to not use it due to the buoyancy characteristics and the need to put a new valve on it than because of the inspection requirements from the alloy. The reason i haven't gotten it hydroed so far has more to do with not being sure it offers much over the steel 72 i already dive.

The 6351 tanks are completely legal and work fine, they just require an additional inspection every 5 years. i don't know why people think they are scrap.

Because many shops will not fill them period. Go ahead with it but IMO it is not a good expenditure. I am fully understand and will stay with what I am saying as to value. A new valve (? can you rebuild the valve), Hydro and Eddy Current inspection on a very old tank compared to for example:


They had these on sale last year an I got two for under $200 each. They require no Eddy Current and includes a new VIP, current in Hydro and no Eddy Current inspection needed and no grief getting them filled.

If I owned a shop or if ever get my pieces of a compressor going, I would not fill a 6351 tank.

The new valve is because I have a firey hatred of yoke valves and so only run DIN. Yeah, it means an extra $70 added to the cost when I want to place a new (to me) tank in service, but personal choice. Also helps keep them from breeding too much in the dark.

I do my own fills and if for some reason I cannot, the LDS that does my tank servicing will fill them, so as long as I am getting fills locally that is not a consideration. The biggest thing for me with that particular tank is the buoyancy characteristics of AL tanks when diving wet and whether it really has any advantages over the steel 72 I already spent the money to place in service.

That said, if I were a more normal diver who used AL80s with yoke valves, I would be hoovering up all the 6351 tanks I could get cheap.
