Chuckles .... my Peregrine does not beep, thank god, but the vibration alert on it is quite nice. I have 2 alerts set on mine, 85' and 3 min to NDL. One alert to remind me to slow down my descent, reaching my depth limit; and one alert to remind me it is time to start thinking about coming up.
This neatly demonstrates the difference in diving of a lot of us.

The bottom is where you can't go deeper and varies with the target wreck. 40m/130ft, 50m/165ft, 60m/200ft, etc.. NDL's are meaningless as it's the TTS which you have to be on top of and it will vary according to conditions and when you've told the skipper you'll be back up...

The Petrel/Perdix/Nerd will alert you when the CNS has exceeded 100%, but that's just a message. If your PPO2 is high or low, you should be on to that. However it's possible if when ascending you mistime an oxygen injection it'll momentarily spike until it's pumped around the loop. Really don't want more bells and whistles going off as I know it's an issue.

Horses for courses.

Rec vs Tech. I am purely Rec diving, playing with my NDL on my way up; 1-2 min to NDL. Should point out that virtually all my diving is shore diving. My depth limit is 100' according to my cert, but as we all know, there are no scuba cops, I have been to 126' to see some nice cloud sponges. Definitely paid attention to my NDL on that dive.

I have a Perdix and I like it a lot. Do I wish it had alerts? Sure, why not? If they made a Perdix that had alerts would I pay to upgrade? Probably not.
I wear a Garmin Descent Mk1 (that has alerts) as a backup. I really only use the ascent rate alert because ascent rate is the parameter I am most likely to inadvertently violate, especially after the safety stop.
I like haptic alerts because it's been a long time since I've been able to hear an audible alert.

After reading several comments, I realised that the pro-alarm arguments are illustrating what many divecenter owners say (with a negative tone): divers these days don't know and don't care. They fully rely on a computer that tells them when it's time to go a little less deep. But what it actually means? they have hardly any clue.
And I think that's true for quite a large number of divers.
  • Having an alarm to warn you that you're going to deep: you're not paying attention.
  • Having an alarm when you are within two or three minutes from your NDL: you're not paying attention.
  • Having an alarm if you're ascending too fast: you're not paying attention.
The ancient saying (plan your dive, dive your plan) has gathered dust and now belongs in the vintage section.
What plan? I have a computah that beeps at me when it's time to ascend!

That computer is not just beeping at you. It would be very social if your computer would just beep at you. But it's beeping at the whole group! And in my personal experience, that beeping is usually followed by shrugging shoulders, as the owner has no idea why it beeps and how to make it stop.

ShearWater: if you decide to listen to some divers and add a beep to your product, can you please also add the remote instant flooding option on my computer? Bluetooth communication would be awesome, as that would be easy: just get within 4m of the culprit and execute.

Come on, I m quite surprised, it look like very few people are actually willing to look into the possible added security aspect…

I’m not looking for something that beeps every 20minutes and annoys everyone you might dive with. I’m looking at something customizable that alert life threatening situations.

The only points made so far against it are the cost of the device and cost of development. Valid points, but hardly a deal breaker.
Well, I was lucky enough to borrow the top model sunt eon steel black or whatever. The thing couldn't shut up.PPO2 Above 1.4, beeping, going above 6 meters, beeping, below 6 meters again, beeping, more optimal gas available, beeping, didn't follow its 2nd" required " safetystop, beeping nonstop. Needless to say, I'm close to returning my Suunto COMPASS as it was designed by the same company. My point is, I've yet to see a valid argument FOR beeping. The folks who don't know if they are at 6 16 or 26 meters are, luckily, not the desired customers for Shearwater.

Sorry for the rant🤭
