You could use the original jj backplate. It's possible to change the height of the JJ relative to backplate. (That's not possible with a halcyon backplate with 2 holes for mounting tanks. The JJ backplate has 3 pairs of holes for mounting the JJ).

I don't know what kind of first stages you are using. Maybe you could use first stages for the doubles with less weight.
The BP could maybe work, but I didn't think about being head heavy at the moment I purchased the unit and made the BP vs MOD1 deal. So I never dove the JJ backplate and the only BPs I have are halcyons and 1 6mm agir which only has 1 set of holes. But good suggestion and worth a look.

I did try different 1st stages to be honest, switching between SP MK25s and MK17s more for the hoserouting than for weight, don't think there is much difference between those to make a big difference underwater... but they are at the end of the set so a small difference could make a difference. Didn't notice it though...

At the moment happy with the 8,5 L setup, it's slightly heavier (3Kg more) on an already heavy unit, but I'm not walking 500m/1km with the unit anymore like in "de schelde" ;-)
 
Out of curiosity what’s the total weight of the unit if you don’t mind me asking?
 
Full set ready to dive about 53 kg. Which is almost 18-19 kg heavier than a standard ready to dive JJ CCR (according to the jj website). Add a 80cuft with stage and rigging (bailout on the standard set) and you are in the same ballpark, although of course not all on your back and more gas in the GUE set (2200 barliter in bailout vs 3400 barliter in D8,5 bailout, plus I can pump the set to 250-280bar easily, can't recommend that on an al 80cuft tank).

But yes it's a heavy ****€r!! Not so heavy as a D18 set though ;-) trust me!

Have you been in the lot recently? Some weeks ago, I met a guy in Landenouse with a JJ with two 8,5l tanks instead of the standard 7l, and I do not think this is a very common configuration...

Nope... not been in the Lot in 2 years. Would love to, but other dive priorities at the moment ;-)

even with the factory configuration I'm using a carbon fiber plate (H one but still carbon).
first stages - Mk25's.
changing plate height is just like adjusting the harness - will render me unable to reach my valves.
dreaming about adding some floats or something to it - maybe where they push those tube weights?
but where can I find 25mm diameter floats?

someone else asked about weighting - my unit (H wing/ Carbon Plate/ Carbon 300Bar O2 / D7 steel 220B / H focus canister light / 0.85L alum for suit inflation / Mk25's) weights ~55Kg with all gases full ready to dive.
yes it's a PITA climbing ladders + lifting into the car after the dive - but hey that's just motivation to get a Jeep :D

What kind of tanks are you using? It took me a lot of effort to find the “right” tanks. The tanks I’m using are 7 liter steel tanks with a weight of 7,6 kg. (Vitkovice)

It took me a lot of time/dives to adjust my harnas and find the right height of my rebreather relative to my backplate.

Now it’s almost impossible to get in and out my harness at the surface. But my trim underwater is ok and I can reach my valves.

(It was much easier with ccr1 in Egypt without undersuit compared to my 400 gram undersuit+heated vest in cold water….)
 
In the end being able to reach your left post is not so relevant (right post for sure).Solving being head heavy is.

Vitkovice == rust - ain't going to waste money on those (even the 3L cylinders coming with the JJ are bad -use Fabers).

as @beester explained - it's also related to how tall you are - I did try adjusting my harness several times.
I agree that in order to reach valves properly I also need to set my harness so it's quite difficult to kit on the boat.

when I "lower" the unit - must easier to kit up (longer shoulder straps) + not so head heavy - but can't reach my valves.


so - 8.5L or perhaps find some float to stick on the top part of the unit to cancel out the effect (and since my max undies are BZ200 also make the unit lighter - even with carbon plate I'm overweighed).

@Matan : Just be sure you can reach the right post! (most have issues only with the left post, if you are right handed that is). If you also can't reach the right post you need to get that solved.. an ADV run away can only be solved by closing the right post and you don't have time in this scenario to ask a buddy for help.
