They can, but the question becomes, "do you see the value in it?" The extra cost in the eddy test starts to weigh in on the value of the tank. Would I continue to use them without testing and my own compressor? NOPE!

Aside from the current pandemic shortage, aluminum tanks are fairly inexpensive new, so why bother with the issues of these bad alloy tanks?

As to your 72 steels, if they are liner free, they are a nice tank. Yes, the 1/2" valve gives some pause. Don't fear diving a j-valve, just put it in the down position and it is just a tank of air. $70-$100 for new 1/2" k-valves is a tough pill..

Honestly I don't think they're worth it, but wanted to get confirmation. I don't use AL tanks. But they were free so I took them. I figured I'd come here later.

I went to pick up a set of steel 100HP, the set was $75, so when he started throwing stuff on the truck I didn't complain.

$75 for a pair of 100s? Damn.

I agree with you. In my quest for used tanks, I have stayed away from the "bad" alloy tanks from that era, although they are abundantly available. As soon as I saw the date on the tank was from then, I quickly noped out of there. I have also narrowed my search to Catalinas because they are safe, regardless. As it is, the Catalinas I bought have ultimately been no more than 10 years old.

I honestly do not see the value in paying the extra money for eddy current when just getting safe tanks are much easier and cost effective over the long haul.

And now you know why I took the crap tanks. I told him I didn't want them, but he just put them in the truck, lol.

I’ve seen some 100s and 85s going for just about the cost of new due to the current shortage.

I know it's bad. Here's my treasure;

Nice!

I've found OoH PST3500-100s/120s for around $25-35 occasionally. Of course a buddy got a set like that for free.

I have "too many" steels. Need to build that tumbler. I have the treadmill parts ...

ETA: Put the 72s up on the classifieds. Maybe one of the vintage aficionados will bit and cover the cost of the PSTs.

I hear you, I had a deal slip through my fingers last year still haunts me. A set of 120 doubles for $100.

I thought about throwing the 72's up, we'll see.

The 72's and the Aluminum 30 should be good, the other tanks are basically scrap as even if they pass hydro they are not worth the effort. People will usually pay between $25-50 for the steel 72's. The 30 is not desirable to most people but does make a decent pony bottle for recreational dives. Those Genesis steel 100's are great tanks, out of all my tanks they are my favorite. I really need to find someone willing to trade my LP95's for a set of Genesis 100 or 120 tanks.

If shipping wouldn't murder me, I'd probably take the 72's off your hands.
