Hello.
I am heading to Cozumel in a couple of weeks and was just noticing the dive shop at my resort offers torch rentals. I have a nice torch that I can take but do I truly need one? The less I have to take through TSA the better but I don't want to miss anything because I didn't have good light.
Thanks
Aaron

the wife and i always bring a couple with us. they are smaller rechargeable ones. work great on night dives and in the cenotes. they are kinda bright for day time use but as long as you just use the edge of the beam, it works fine. surprising how many little critters hide in all those holes in the reef.

We love night dives in Cozumel, so I would definitely bring some light for that. With the advances in LED lights, even a $50, 1000+ lumen light can be pretty small today, and that is plenty (perhaps even more than enough) for Cozumel night dives. In addition, we keep small 300+ lumen penlights on our BCDs to peek into holes during the day and as back-ups for night dives.

A decent light is always nice to have even in the Caribbean for looking under ledges, overhangs, swim throughs, etc. I don't splash without one. If you wish to do any night diving you will need at least two lights plus a marker light for your tank.

No plans on night dives but will have my gopro with me. Sounds like it'll be worth it to take my light. It's a BigBlue 1200 WP. Not big and throws a wide, soft light for pics.

A video light may frustrate other divers (or critters) on a night dive. If you do a night dive, try and find a light with a tight beam.

Torch, absolutely. I never dive without one.
Even if I don't use it on the dive, it is part of my 'safety gear', small backup torch has a strobe function as well.

You'll definitely want a torch during the day. I've have also had good luck with a $50 1000 lumen variety. This one has 3 o-rings and machined well. I am fairly confident it won't leak (25 dives on mine, so far, so good). It's a clone of one of the very popular OrcaTorch models (at a substantial discount).
