I am preparing to due several dives into the Oriskany in 2022, want to get pictures of my Grandfathers quarters whom was a CAG on the ship in the 60's. Will be taking the TDI Extended range and Wreck Pen courses later this spring. I have heard the ship has shifted a lot from the recent hurricanes, so I plan to get 1 or 2 dives this summer to the Flight Deck, so I have an idea how to plan after. See if my HP100 doubles will be enough or if I need to go larger.

Are you planning to do this dive on air? Was under the impression that the Extended Range course was done on air

Well, the present plan is yes, Air. Can that change, sure. Until I get out the the Wreck and see it, and have an idea of what and how I want to map my dive, I can not comment more.

This is my present thought, please correct me if I am wrong. 95% of my diving is under 100 feet in AOW or OW. I have seen enough hellfire from my time in the Marines and in Life, I do not need to push the envelope anymore. If I am passionate about something I will do it though.

During my Cavern class I learned, there is a lot of extra stuff for Cave. Nothing I can not handle (my src actually got better while focusing on the extra tasks). But if I did go Full Cave, I do not think I would be Cave diving more then once ever 3-6 months. I am not convinced that is a safe idea. As for going Tri-mix, or helitrox, I ask the same thing. How often am I going to go below 150. Is it worth the extra training money and gear for once every 3-6 months. Is that safe?

Now, I am retiring from one of my side careers in 45 days. This will free up an huge amount of time to do more Tech Diving if I choose but, I will just have to find a team first.

For me, the answer is a resounding yes! You don't need to go to 150' to benefit from good tech training or helium. I actually like some helium anytime I hit 130', and I would start it even shallower on a penetration dive. Finally, even if you decide not to do a lot of tech diving, the training and gear will make you a better and safer diver in the recreational range. Tech diving is expensive, but for me, it was worth every penny I've spent on it.

I think you are making the wrong analogies. Cavern vs. cave diving has a new set of skills that you don't really use outside of an actual cave.
If you're doing a dive to 150ft, the equipment and training is exactly the same. The only difference is what gas is in your tanks and what that does to the safety of the dive. It is no different than breathing air or nitrox at 40ft. At 150ft, it lowers the gas density which decreases your work of breathing and risk of hypercapnia. It also raises the equivalent narcotic depth of the combined ppO2 and ppN2 which helps to clear your head.

I would not do wreck penetration at 150ft without a good bit of helium in the mix for the gas density and narcotic depth benefits.

I haven't dived the Oriskany but I'd like to one day. My understanding is the flight deck now resides at about 150 feet. Assuming your dad's cabin is below that, it might be a pretty deep dive. Personally I'd want to have some helium in my mix for that, especially if penetrating the wreck and navigating within it. Plus, if something goes wrong at that depth it's much more difficult to problem solve when narc'd.

Points noted. I will look into an instructor during the summer I like and can afford.

@LandonL is running a normoxic course next week in Ft Lauderdale and his courses are quite reasonable. Expect about $1500 all in with boats and gas

I do have Landon contact info, but I am not available for a class for several months.

We have classes running periodically, usually one about every month or two.
