I've lost several planned for trips this year. Fortunately Cathay Pacific and EVA Airlines from Taiwan both gave me full refunds in 7 working days for my airline tickets. One resort gave me 50% back for not coming to Indonesia claiming it wasn't their business if the Indonesian government stopped people coming in. Good thing for them is that when I do go I will stay at a resort next to them with several friends as we plan doing a 3 - 4 week stay when things do open up.

The diving in Taiwan is really poor on marine life. I get messages like clear visibility from dive shops and when I ask them barely any fish or critters in any of their photos they claim well it's good for beginners lol twats.

I've been diving more with my wife and haven't been able to dive at all with my dive buddy. My wife is now considering getting her cave cert along with me.

Interesting.

I wonder how many who have seriously considered switching to practices they previously thought were too high-risk, like hard overhead diving or solo diving, because of the coronavirus situation. That would be an interesting exercise on personal risk assessment evaluations.

I have to admit I've considered solo diving as an alternative, but landed on the conclusion that that's still a hard "no" for me.

My cave instructor here in the Midwest has had more demand for classes this winter as the dive site is local(ish).

I want to do the Solo course but will do it after I get more dive time in and back to my good levels of diving. I'd probably do 20 dives then do the course. Then when I return to Taiwan I might just go diving alone.

I did solo in October. I only got it to mooch about on the shallow side of the quarry (no more than 30ft deep) or do skills on a platform without boring a buddy. That’s it. I’d always intended on taking it, timing was such that I did it this year. Redundancy isn’t an issue since I’m always diving SM now.

So, for you solo used to be a soft "no", but not a hard "no". And you've adjusted your opinion. Is that right?

For me, solo is still a hard "no". Even after reconsidering. That's usually how it is with hard "nos".

It was never a soft “no.” I always planned on taking the class. It was simply a matter of when.

So, why is it a hard "no" for you?

It's not for everybody do they need to explain that to everyone if they decide not to dive solo. I plan on taking the course but don't really plan on doing solo dives.
