Man found dead in golf course pond
MONTREAL – A 65-year-old man was found dead in a golf course pond in Sainte-Julie.

Michel Guy Beland was reported missing by his girlfriend to Richelieu-Saint-Laurent police Sunday night.

His body was found at the Vallee-du-Richelieu Golf Club Monday.

Police say Beland may have been trying to retrieve golf balls from the pond at night using diving equipment.

“The man who unfortunately died here Sunday night didn’t work for us and didn’t have the authorization to come to our club for diving in our lakes,” said the golf club n a statement to CityNews.

This type of operation is usually done by Mulligan International, a company based in Beloeil that the club often uses.

Beland’s death is not considered suspicious.

This is crazy to trespass to take golf balls ...

Better money than picking bottles, I've been told
No clue whether it was true or not

Maybe, but not much. I see them on the net for like 30¢ each in bulk. If the golf club caters to customers who shoot and lose the best, maybe one could get more. I don't guess that Quebec has gators or venomous snakes, but solo diving at night still sounds like a lot of work and risk for beer money.

i can only imagine how much fertilizer run-off is in those ponds....ive seen videos of golf ball divers....it is some nasty looking water.

Yup. The divers that are making decent money at it are pulling up hundreds of balls in a day.

As you said...unless that was a pretty exclusive club with wealthy clientele, I’m betting that the majority of balls were budget & junk/XX-outs.

I’ve recovered a few hundred balls over the years from the woods, deep rough, and water hazards. Maybe 5-10% of them we decent enough balls that someone would be willing to pay much for them. The rest would be x < $0.25/ball (paid by the end purchaser...not to someone who’s recovering balls, selling to a used ball place, who in turn has to sell them to the end user).

People throw all kinds of stuff in water hazards. I imagine that if it’s a deep pond and you’ve got limited light (assuming he had a hand-held light)...it would be very easy to get a hose snagged on something and drown.

That’s not getting into wildlife concerns (probably less up there), fertilizer runoff, getting cut on something, etc. No way would I take a plunge in a golf course pond without some serious shots and a dedicated gear setup (wouldn’t want that crap in my main gear).

I dove a golf course water hazard (more of a natural pond than a lake) many years ago by invitation of the course owner. I only did it once, though I was offered to do it again.

It was the second worst dive I've ever done for contamination*. All the chemicals in the water and all that. Visibility was complete zero. Holding my gauge up to my mask - I could not see it at all. 100% braille dive.

I did manage to scoop up a few balls, but once on the surface they were all definitely "driving range $1 per bucket" type balls.

(* worst dive was 'goose crap lake' in central Alberta in the mid 2000s)

Could be a good way to suicide without leaving family knowing that is what you did.

My favorite golf ball imprint: on a ball found in the woods while looking for my errant shot:

"If you found this, you suck at golf, too!"

And indeed I do, seeing as I play less than once per year.

When I did it about 30 years ago I was getting .25 per ball from the pro shop. I had to wipe them clean and I didn't get anything for junk balls (cuts, range balls, etc). I think they were selling them for .50 per ball.

I usually pulled out a couple hundred per dive.
