Usual "warning" when looking at Subsurface SAC rates. We actually try to approximate compressibility of gases, so our SAC rates may be different (usually slightly lower) from those calculated using naive math assuming perfect compressibility of gases. Because no, your cylinder doesn't contain twice as much gas when you go from 150bar to 300bar.
Also note that SAC in Subsurface is RMV in a lot of other software.

In Garmin Connect, metric SAC is bar/min and doesn't take tank size into consideration.

Yeah, it always bugs me that Subsurface uses SAC when it means RMV.

Bottom line for this: If you use a Descent and you want to download and view your dives on your phone or tablet, you have to have an Internet connection to get them there. But, if you are content to view them on a laptop, you can use Subsurface and then you do not have to have an Internet connection.

Right?

Not that it matters to me. I have said in the past that I would buy a Descent if they came out with an AI version that uses PPS transmitters. But, now that I have learned that Garmin has specifically stamped Verboten on a BT download from the Descent to Subsurface, I would not even buy an AI one. That is bull crap. If it would mess something up on the Garmin side, Garmin should fix their janky software. I can download via BT from my Teric to Subsurface-mobile and still also download to the Shearwater Cloud....

I would argue the Mk1 is not targeted to new divers ("amateurs"?). The price tag is too high and it supports, up to 6 gases, Nitrox, Helium, even even CCR.

Price is too high? Its in the middle of Garmin's line inbetween the Fenix and MARQ. Some of the Fenix 6 line are right there in price nearing the $1000 mark.

Or just use something like Subsurface.

Subsurface will:
  • work with almost any dive computer so all your previous dives can be there in the one app.
  • work when you don't have an internet connection (at least for browsing your dive log).
  • do most of the other things on your list
I know I have used it in the past and it's good but in my new very simple dive mode, I really dont use anything other than date, location bottom time, depth (all that dive ops want to see)

I’ll say it again to make sure you are aware, if you don’t have internet access you won’t have anything to show the dive operators if you use Garmin Connect or Garmin Dive app.

Edit: You do have a dive log on the watch itself (well, the Mk1 does). It only shows one dive at a time, but you can see date, bottom time, and max. depth. Location can be sort of worked out from the map showing your entry and exit points.

Right?
Correct. Once you have them on your phone/tablet they are available without Internet connection. i.e. you only need the Internet connection to download them to the phone/tablet. You can always view them (once they are there).

Thanks ATJ, normally I only need to show the log 1 year later (to prove I have dove in the last 12 months) but I have to admit confusion (and have not tested it at all, as I dont have a descent) but my other Garmin devices will upload to my phone via bluetooth, sure I can't do any analytics but to see the event (run, hike, etc) does't require anything but bluetooth for all other Garmin devices, are you saying the Descent wont load data without internet connectivity.

Are you sure about that for your other Garmin devices?

There is basically no data stored in Garmin Connect on the mobile phone. Garmin Connect mobile is just used to get the data to the server. So, like your other Garmin devices, the Descent connects to the phone with Bluetooth and the data is loaded via Bluetooth to the phone and the phone stores it on the server. Additionally, you can't view the data without an Internet connection.

Try this: Put your phone into Airplane mode (to simulate no Internet connection). Go into Garmin Connect on your phone. It will display the My Day summary bit it should also say "No Internet Connection". Try to open any activity you have done. In fact, try to bring up a list of runs, or walks, etc. Try to look at your Steps details.

With your phone still in Airplane mode, go out and record an activity. A short walk will do. Try to sync that activity.

@ATJ, first of all I only have to state that you are 100% correct, and indeed after the latest updates all of my Garmin devices refuse to connect via Bluetooth if the device they are connected to lacks internet connectivity!

Now I need to test how the aqualung i770 behaves. Ok the good news is it seems to sync without internet connectivity. Hmm, so when heading on a liveaboard I guess this means not being able to see the logs (not an issue but good to know).

That's odd. Bluetooth connection works fine between my Mk1 and my iPhone without Internet connectivity. I can control music on the phone, use Find My Phone, use Find My Device. I'm sure Notifications would work, too, but there won't be many notifications if there's no internet connection.

What doesn't work is anything that requires connection to the Internet: uploading activities, changing some settings, browsing activities and other data.
