Their return policy is store credit only.
me, I would not further reward them and take to another shop.

they either sold you a bcd with air 2 that needs servicing, which if not disclosed then is crap, or/and they are mad you didn't buy thereg from them and want to get you for that.

Either way, why support them?

good service and honesty are worth supporting a local shop, yes, even if more expensive. But what you are getting doesn't deserve support

I'll give them a chance to offer the service "for free" but if the answer is no then I'll be forced to go somewhere else. Really sucks though because it's local and where I'm doing all my certs.

Please tell me you did get the correct LP inflator hose with the used BCD/Air2, and that isn't another hidden expense to discover...

Find a new shop for that as well if you haven’t already paid or just finish your current cert then move on.

100% agree!

They should’ve never sold that to you without it being serviced. A relationship with a dive shop goes both ways, not just you throwing money at them because they are close, you have to trust and like them as well.
I wouldn’t do any business with them after they pulled that.

Update: It seems this was a misunderstanding, so either the employee I talked to was mis-informed or maybe they saw this thread haha. If the service ends up costing more than the quote I guess I'll know what's the deal.

It could be a misunderstanding about what servicing means? Making sure the IP matches with the Air2 and the first stage is important but shouldn’t require an overall or much time/cost. If they are requiring a complete overhaul, then that’s wrong.

There will always be misunderstandings and employees are learning the ropes all the time. Just stay calm and keep the pressure on. Sounds like you did just that.

TLDR;
My LDS is saying they can't service my 1st and 2nd stage reg without also servicing my Air2, which I just purchased from them (from their certification fleet). Is this normal?

The long version:
A few weeks ago, I bought a used bcd with an Air2 Octo from my LDS. I assumed the bc and octo were all set with servicing. I paid significantly more for this than I would have on eBay/Letgo/CL/OfferUp because I wanted to support them and I know the dive business is hard.

I also just purchased a used 1st and 2nd stage from a local guy on Letgo and took it to my LDS for servicing. They told me they couldn't service the 1st/2nd without also servicing my Air2 at the same time. Something about pressure testing with everything attached that I didn't fully understand. I said I was confused because I just purchased the bcd from them and assumed the Air2 Octo had been serviced. They said it had not.

So, in addition to the higher purchase price of the bcd, they won't service the 1st/2nd without also doing a full-service on the Air2 I just purchased from them, which adds $30-$60 to the cost of the bcd which I could have bought, unserviced, on eBay for 1/2 price.

So, my questions are:
  1. Is it normal for a LDS to sell unserviced, used equipment?
  2. If so, is it normal that they don't tell you it needs servicing?
  3. Is it required for a LDS to service all regs at the same time and not just the 1st/2nd?
  4. If you buy a used 1st/2nd and get it serviced, is there some danger in not also servicing the Octo at the same time, assuming it has been serviced recently?
Thanks in advance for replies. I'd really like to trust my LDS but this isn't a good look. Maybe I just don't understand how it works. :|

E...

When you purchased the BCD c/w AIR-2 inflator regulator...they may have checked the cracking pressure on the AIR-2 and determined it was ''acceptable'' as is...

''Balancing'' the complete system at time of service may have some validity and merits...or maybe it's just a ''penalty charge'' to you for not purchasing the reg set from them...

Either way...their shop...their rules...you have become their ''captive audience''...

One suggestion is to find another shop...and in the mean time...increase your knowledge about dive gear...and work on becoming ''self reliant''...there's lots to learn...and lots of money to be saved...

In closing...never ''assume'' anything...learn what you need to know...and ask all the questions...your learning as to what to ask...has already started...

Good luck with your new kit...

If all they need to do is adjust the Air2 for the new regs, I understand that. However if they say the Air2 needs a complete service, then they sold you dive gear that is neglected or dangerous at worst.

No dive shop should ever sell used gear that has not been looked over and serviced by a proper service tech. If it was me, I would take my business elsewhere.
