Canadian flagged or US?

Isle Royale is U.S. It is all U.S. territorial water from MN to Isle Royale.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it from the investigative side. It just seems to be that since the moment this broke, there were many people who immediately went to the default position that there must have been gross negligence on someone's part.
Indeed, there is a very big difference between keeping an open mind and casting suspicion without evidence.

We have been discussing the specifics of the emergency egress from the bunk room, and I think that there has been some misunderstanding of the actual layout - at least on my part. Based on the photos that were posted upthread, I assumed that the escape hatch was above a bunk, as did several other posters. But I just found this drawing (from the Southern California News Group), which has the escape hatch in the shower...

Not sure that it makes much difference, but good to know the actual layout. Maybe on the Spree and the sister ship in this fleet, the design was different? Maybe this drawing is wrong? I thought I saw something different on a TV animated graphic.

I can't tell from the drawing how you get into the shower room from the bunk space, or what the signage was... I also can't tell what the rectangular column is just aft of the shower room wall

It's been discussed several hundred posts ago that the actual hatch from the bunk room is not shown on this picture. Shower room is not connected to the bunk room, and even if it had a hatch as this picture suggests, it couldn't have been used from the bunk room.

The rectangular column just aft of the shower room wall is a storage closet.

I’m not saying the picture is wrong, but reporters made it up.

Go back to earwax.

A few folks who have dived the Conception said the drawing was wrong.

From your description, sounds like you want the exit to to span from one bunk corridor to the other. This would put a hole across basically the ENTIRE exit path from the solon. We're not talking broken legs, we're talking about everyone that comes up the staircase falling back down into the bunk area in low visibilty.

I would humbly suggest that those that do not have first hand experience with the Conception or Vision refrain from suggesting design changes based on pictures and incomplete knowlegde of the layout of the boat. I do not mean this as an insult! It's just if you don't have a good 3D image of how everything fits together, you're likely to miss key points, like putting a gaping hole in the middle of an exit route.

Roak

The point is that in this case the emergency hatch at some point appeared to be worthless regardless of ladder or berth leading to it.

I suspect that the final report will reveal major problems in several areas:

1) If this was due to a charging station then how that was allowed to continue and its setup may both be flawed for some batteries subject to catastrophic failure.

2) Overnight watch that should be one that checked often for fire either was not working or was poorly implemented.

3) Automatic fire/smoke detection and alerting mechanisms may need improvement.

4) Emergency egress from the bunk area needs improvement to account for both current egress poiunts being inaccessible.

I covered most of these points last night.

Got it. That makes more sense...
Someone familiar with the boat mentioned there was a second emergency hatch that ran out of the shower compartment. They don’t show the one out of the bunk room, but the one in the shower exists.

Well, that's one point. But the fact that in this particular disaster, the hatch may have been useless due to conditions above, doesn't necessarily mean that any discussion of or improvement to the hatch access from below wouldn't be useful in other situations.
