I was diving in Newport on Sunday. We dove Green Bridge just High tide and then King’s Beach about around 3:00. Conditions were pretty good both dives once getting out into open water the visibility dropped from 10-15 to less than 10. Max depth was about 29’ bottom time was 59 minutes water temp was a balmy 55F. There were a few good sized taugs, but nothing amazing. I forgot my camera in the car, so no videos.

The second dive was a at King’s. We stayed mostly on the shore side. I entered the water and my dive computer started cycling through modes and I realized it was most likely the battery needed to be replaced. Since my computer is air integrated, we kept the dive short.

This year I have started something new for tracking dives. I added a dry boxed smart phone to my flag. It does not get service, but the GPS works fine. Using a software called Strava, I can track the progress of the dive to actually see where we went on the dive versus where I THOUGHT we went. It has been working pretty well so far.

Hey Rich that dive track at KB is almost the same dive I THINK I did Sunday.

I like that idea of surface tracking. I have an old hand held gps that i might give it a try. I have to go down to Newport in Augst or Semptember, my wife wants to take a tour of the mansions/art. Since God did not give me an appreciaton for either shes willing to drop me off on a beach for diving. She will be parking at Salve. If Lands End is blown out wheres the next closest place thats sheltered.

Can't argue too much with diving but....seeing the mansions is not about art (i'm not a big fan either) but they are a walk into a different time in history, they are a lens into our past and truly something amazing to see. I would highly recommend you see at least 2 or 3 of the mansions, they really are worth it.

I've got an old GPS that claims to be waterproof, which means to me it can get wet, splashed, dropped into puddle. It could probably survive being strapped to float, if all went well, no submerging. However although I would be able to see my track, there is no map underlay and also no way to interface with anything to upload the track.

I've dived these areas so many times for so long I know where I am by the bottom features, depth, direction of the current, types of seaweed and other cues. No brag, just fact.

@CT-Rich is there a shallow cove like Ft Wetherhill but in Newport that world be good for snorkeling?
The cove at Green Bridge is actually really good for snorkeling. It is pretty big(much bigger than FTW), relatively shallow and warm. My kids used to snorkel there all the time.
