A friend of mine was on a liveaboard when it struck. There was no way to get a flight out but was able to rent a car and then drove to Bangkok.

Probably depended on where you were stuck.

My friend was interested in getting to Bangkok and away from the disaster area.

Yes, quite a few people stayed to help.

I was here, flights from and to Phuket were no problem.

I'll have to ask him again what happened but I'd swear he said the airport was not operating.

OK, my memory refreshed. Yes, airport was operational however, packed to the rafters with folks, many injured, and he believed it would be far too long a wait to get on a flight out.

On a diving prospective, I couldn't ask more: I had the best instructor ever, and I couldn't ask any better. I've never had an instructor so prepared, demanding and professional. He really made me work hard, but the whole course was great!
