Which would you choose-Go Pro 7 or Olympus TG5?

Hi All,

I'm trying to decide between the Go Pro 7 and Olympus TG5 and would love your advice!
I want a simple small system for now that can can capture both video and pictures under water.
I understand you can't switch modes with the Go Pro 7 in the super suit and people describe taking the lens off to fit the GO Pro in the supersuit is a pain. How do each of these perform without an external light source? I'm not ready to get into a tray with lights. What do you think about the use of selfie stick poles for getting closer to critters? I see them on a lot of dives. I like to enjoy diving in the moment vs need to capture everything. But if there is am amazing moment to capture I want to be ready I want something that can be used topside too for hiking, kayaking,boating waterfall climbing etc. Is the video comparable between these 2 cameras? How are the pictures if capturing from video on Go Pro. I leave in a week for Qamea, Fiji. I appreciate any help and advice you can offer!!!!!!

I have a TG4 and if you want to capture both, I would go with the TG5. The TG5 is a very nice and relatively cheap point and shoot camera that takes some exceptional pictures for a point and shoot. I just used it also in Lake Erie last weekend and shot video of the wreck I was on. I felt it took pretty good video as well with no strobes given the low light and low visibility. If you are more leaning towards the video side I would lean more towards the GoPro.

The attached image is one shot using my TG4 camera. The TG5 is just as good.

PS I have read some negative reviews about battery life on the new GoPro. Ive dove with my TG 4 for 2 dives in 38 degree water and each dive was right around 30-35 minutes and still had over had the battery left. I have never killed it completely on a dive.

There are 3rd party housings for Gopro that don't require you to remove the front lens. The one I've used for nearly 100 dives with it is this one.

You can certainly switch modes while in the housing. With camera on, hold side button and top shutter button at same time for two seconds and you get a Wrench icon and it enters settings mode.

I get great ( for my purposes ) shots with my TG 5. Until recently I have just used the internal flash, the above was taken in Alor using the internal flash. Now I use a simple dive torch for macro with better results. The battery should in theory take 360 shots before it needs to be recharged.

GoPro is the superior choice if you want to shoot 4K video. TG5 is the way to go if you favour stills.

GoPro is best suited to shooting wide. You have to be very close for portraits and macro options are limited and difficult to execute.

TG5 is great for portraits and macro due to its amazing microscope mode. You need to add a wet wide angle lens to compete with GoPro on wide shots.

In either case, I would recommend a tray for shooting video. It's hard to control shake using a selfie stick. If you don't purchase lights and are not adept at colour correction, you will also want a red filter for shooting video with both options.

I used to carry both a go-pro and a tg-4 on my dives. After shooting the same dive site on both the tg-4 and the go-pro I stopped carrying the go-pro.You can just do so much more with the Olympus.

I used the camera 'naked' for snorkeling and around water in general, but for diving it is in the Olympus waterproof housing = 140/150 feet. I've taken it down to 110, but usually in the 35-65 range.

al248005, Thanks so much for your reply!! I was concerned about GO Pro battery life too. I'm still weighing all the options. Thanks for your picture too from the Lake Erie wreck...and with no lights!! Happy Diving!!!!!!!!
