Thanks but what is a finger spool, do you mean the small line or an SMB?

A finger spool is a small 50’ reel. On second thought, it might be best to practice using a reef hook with webbings or simple line. In a safe environment and swift currents, practice hovering or gentle finning in the current slip stream. See photo from Raja Ampat, hovering in a moderate current.

Thanks. I"ve heard on videos that it's best to hook the line in the middle of your body so you dont hang to one side. But where on a BCD can you hook in the middle, all the D rings are off to the side.

Hi Dave, I usually just hold the hook if it’s on a reel or a line. I rarely, if every hook the line to my BP. My personal feeling - I would hook the line to the center D-ring on my crotch strap.
