I'd be nervous about my dive equipment if you take the night train, unless you book the private cabin which can be locked.

Flying in to Chumphon or Suratthani will be a lot easier, i'd say. Check Nok Air, Air Asia and Thai Lion for flights.

The Thais don't celebrate Easter, and April is low season
How about Songkran!?
I believe that's mid April... probably the busiest time of year for Thai celebrations / holidays.
Something else for OP to bear in mind.

If I'm taking the train I will definitively reserve a cabin for me (it's very cheap).
I'm pretty sure I'll book an early flight though...

Quick question: I don't have a DAN insurance because in Australia we don't really need one, but what about Thailand?

It makes sense to have one, if only because of the emergency evacuation. Don't know about your health insurance if that covers divi9ng accidents abroad yes or no.

On most liveaboards a dive insurance is required these days.

All DC's and boats are by law also required to have insurance for all customers, liveaboards try to avoid that expense by requiring their customers to have their own insurance. Legally not good enough though.

...as soon as I've figure out the difference between their single and family insurance I'll get one.

Another quick question: what's the water temp over there?
5 mm or 3 mm?
Usually, when I tec dive down here, even with toasty 25 degrees, I prefer to use my 5 because I got cold after a while...
But maybe in Thailand the water is warmer...

25 is freezing. Phket area 29, Similans 27-28 with some thermoclines, Koh Tao tends to be just a bit cooler than Phuket, count on 28 as well.
