Last evening somebody broke into my truck and took a yellow pelican case with tons of spares in it. This is this second time this year in Monterey this has happened to me. Sad been diving here for almost two decades and this year is the only time I’ve had stuff stolen!!

That is a bummer. Sorry for your troubles. Not helpful to you but reminded me that I had a Calypso IV reg stolen from my car in San Diego in 1977. I was so pissed I wrote a letter to every dive shop in California giving them the serial number and asking that if it was brought in for service to call the police immediately. In 1981 I got a call from my own local dive shop saying a guy had brought in my reg for servicing. (They had my letter tacked up above their work bench for 4 years!) The police were standing by when the guy came in to pick up the reg. His story was that he had bought it at a swap meet a month earlier in San Diego and was getting it serviced so he could use it. I got the reg back but the POS thief never got caught. M

That sucks. I hate thieves. Where in Monterey was your truck when it got broken into? What stuff was taken? We can keep an eye out for it.

Why leave these items in ones car? Sux though....

I learned long ago to never transport anything valuable in a newer car or van. Nothing ever gets stolen from a 15 or 20 year old rusted car with oxidized paint since thieves won't look at it and if they do will think that the only things of value are the used tires.

It sucks that people have to camo their existence with old cars, dressing down, and not flashing expensive things/iPhones in public just so they don’t become a target. I’ve noticed an epidemic of street beggars and meth heads/drug addicts/homeless hanging out in virtually every city and every area I go to in California. I don’t know what’s driving the desperation, whether it’s the explosion in the cost of living on the west coast that’s causing all the angst, or if it’s just a social epidemic of substance abuse and disfunction that’s causing the problem of all this street crime.
There is all sorts of work to be had so I don’t think it’s that. I think it’s the fact that most of those people are so far gone and unemployable. They’re inherently lazy and will always look for an easy way to get by. They either lost their moral compass or never had one to start with.

My truck was at the Red Lion Inn on Munras and it was a yellow pelican dry box full of spare hoses, masks, first aid kits, gauges and a cobra computer. Now between my tool box getting stolen last year at breakwater and this I have no spares left! Eric I’m with you it is an epidemic in this state and nothing is being done about it. I work in Sac and deal with it every day at work and get no help from the city and that’s our capital!

If you got hit at the Red Lion then chances are the thief didn’t even know what he was stealing. He/she just saw the box and went for it. Same as front porch thieves, they have no idea what they are stealing.
Being a punk low life thief seems like a lot of work, wouldn’t it just be easier to get a job?
